HIGH SCHOOL CROWD!! Hippocrates, I don't know who you are but that was damn funny!! And SO TRUE!!!

There there,

Not all the scribes in scribe service are that bad...I'm one!

I will agree...scribe service sucks. I have tried talking to the person in charge and she doesn't listen. I have brought it up to our class officers, and I am trying to set up something next year to change it. The key is to start early and pick good leaders.

I only don't think it's worth getting note service for the scribe notes. I get it for the printed copies of the powerpoints, and because I am a scribe, I don't pay for it. We have discussed making it just a copy service, but people in the class complained. There's no making everyone happy I guess.

I highly recommend getting the full version of Powerpoint because over last year I would take notes on the actual slide presentations more and more and then print them later that night. The copies come late (it's not necessarily their fault...the actual copy place makes them follow a wacky schedule for drop-offs).

Anyway, I could go on and on about note service. For the newbies, don't follow what our class did--change things and it will work for you. Our outside copier service sucks and should be replaced but no one wants to take the initiative. For MSII's--we gotta change things to really make it better.

As for using laptops in class...you'd be amazed how those little fingers of yours can coordinate to get everything the prof says down. It's a skill that was developed over the past year.

Will LECOM put the full power point on your computer? I heard they put some software on there, but I'm not sure to what extent

They only put Power Point viewer on for you, like Acrobat viewer, you can see but not edit. Its a pain in the a$$, from experience, not to have the full version. Its worth the investment if you don't already have it!

geez, seems like i hit a sore spot, huh?

apparently i'm going to have to figure it all out by myself since no one who has been around can seem to agree on anything!

however, nothing you say can make me sad! i'm so excited to start at lecom, irregardless of the freakin note service. apparently i'm taking all of my own notes and i can't wait 😀 so there!

to join note service or not to join, that is the question...

high school crowd LOL

So I'm standing in line last week to see T3 and there's this short, black-haired woman in front of me and she looks really familiar. I can't place her, but her face "haunts" me all week. Then I'm looking through LECOM stuff and I see her picture. It was Dr. Ferretti. Guess I should of said "hi, I'm a new kid at LECOM" and shot the breeze or something, but I get the feeling that wouldn't of enhanced my movie-going experience.

On a side note, I'm pissed that LECOM is still sending stuff to my former address even though I sent in the blue form. So now I routinely receive info about a week later than everyone. I just got that open house form today! Guess I'll be calling Student Affairs.

I love being way off topic since note-taking blah blah blah was irritating the hell out of me.

Note service is completely a student run organization. If you have problems with it, it is your own fault in leadership. I am not nor have I ever been involved with student government, nor note service (i was a subscriber, not a scribe nor a runner) but I may or may not be part of the HSC (I have friends that are in it and most who are not)....very funny comment though. To those that have yet to experience MSII, I doubt you know what Im talking about when I say that you will rely heavily on those scribes late in the year. Those individuals who DO NOT skip an occasional class to study for boards are gambling with their future. No one outside of lecom will care about your grades....but your board scores will count and be with you forever. In fact, lecom doesnt even give your class rank to the hospitals you apply for internship....only quarters. So really it doesnt matter unless you are in the top (they will give the top 5).
In april of MSII, out of the 150 we had in LDP, usually between 50-60 might show up. Those that did usually just sat in back and studied for boards....and those that didnt were studying elsewhere for boards. Needless to say, the printed notes and scribe notes were used heavily.
Class of 2007, I would not rely on the info that 2006 note service gives you...they obviously have some internal problems....I can get you in touch with those that ran ours (2005). We did have problems, but feedback from students was used quite a bit, and it ran very smoothly throughout the MSII year.
Honestly, if I were to do it again....Id get the note service, I would not by any class books, buy only board review books, and start my board studying August of MSI year.
Dr. Sax....funny story....would have been curious to see what she would have said!!

OK..... so we can skip an occasional class and not be handed over to the Gestapo??? If we miss, do we have to call in sick, or does the Orwellian security system monitor our whereabouts? The way that they made it sound was that we'd get detention for things like skipping class and chewing gum. I don't want to have to stand in the corner or write I will not skip class 100 times, as I am a responsible adult that is paying for medical education.

Please....skipping....no one there cares about it. Only the administration (even they dont as much as they like to think they do). Besides, the way attendance is taken is by clip board....it gets passed around during lecture and you sign your name. Hmmmmm.....do you think everyone signed their own name?.....Me...I didnt care if I skipped...never got called in, and I never had anyone sign my name for me.
There is also a "grace" period. When Ben used to take attendence you would be given 10 absences per semester before any action was to be taken....and he would usually mark you here if you were getting close. And attendance isnt taken every hour....only once in the morning, and once in the afternoon.
Dont make too big of deal over the issue....its not. Use your time well. Only you can tell how much youll need to study for school during MSII....the rest should be used for boards....that is much more important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I did not attend any lectures for the second or third (Final) Reproductive System exams (last system of MSII)....and I did fine. And Im also doing very well on my OB/GYN rotation right now. The lack of knowledge I had for those tests didnt matter....if I would have spent more time in class (and less studying for boards) that lack of knowledge didnt hurt me when I dellivered my first baby....or did my first pelvic....or assisted in my first Section....or or assisted in my first hysterectomy. And to tell you the truth....the pimping didnt do anything anyway. Even if you know the answers to questions...the doctors will follow up with ones until you dont know the answer...its called teaching lessons. Theyd rather you not know and come up with a good follow up question of your own so that you can show critical thinking, than yif you can answer questions right.
So, I recommend that you decide early how much lecture you need to attend to get by....and which professors you should attend (and those you shouldnt) and use your time wisely. I had many friends that never studied for class outside of lecture....and did fine (they attended all the lectures)...outside studying was for boards only. Others like me, never went to class....just read the notes thru 1 or 2 times, but correlated it with board studying, and used all other time for boards. Each has his or her own way. Dont think the gestapo doesnt know that....that is why they DO NOT CARE YOUR MSII YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not make a big deal over the lecom rules. They are not that big of deal. Always remember....the school is a business and they lose quite a bit of money if you lose your seat. They will do everything they can to keep you in school.

stomper,

thanks for the advice. it's good to know there's time to skip and study for the boards. i was one to always attend lecture last year, and then i started skipping linville and wondered why i ever even went to his lectures. he still hasn't improved even though the fire is under his butt from nassiri. good luck in rotations.

i'm glad to know to the rules aren't written in stone at lecom...during my interview, they made it sound like the ten commandments. so from what im hearing, each person is allowed about 10 absences a year, or is that a semester before they start calling you in...i don't know how i'm gonna be able to sit through every single lecture for the next year. i'm the type of person that learns best on my own and with what limited amountof time we have, i want to make the best of it.

I have a few more questions...

(1) Should I buy a lab coat for anatomy lab? Do most students wear them?

(2) Are we allowed to wear sneakers in gross lab and in OMM lab?

(3) I'm assuming that on OMM day, dress code is still in effect...is this true?

Doctortobe,
You'll probably be able to purchase a used lab coat from SGA or somebody. Someone should be around to talk about it during orientation or the first week of school.
You will need it to avoid getting too much juice on you.
Sneakers are prohibited but eventually (if its like last year) it won't matter.
You'll be allowed to wear lab OMM stuff in the AM but after noon you'll have to be in dress code if your stopped.

No sneakers on OMM mornings???

I don't remember sneakers not being allowed in anatomy lab. Anyway, I wore them, and never ever had anyone say a word to me about it. The same was true for everyone else that I remember.

As for OMM, yes, of course you are allowed to wear sneakers on the OMM mornings. When you come back for afternoon lectures it's business (dress) as usual.
