LECOM Post-bacc 2015-2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
And I wish they just handed me a medical degree.... 61% is actually really really good for a post-bacc or any grad program that is geared to help people get into medical school. No one is just going to hand it to you, you can look around. Most places don't even break 50%. A major reason as to why I'm going to this program next year is because I have heard from a few sources that if you work hard, it will be rewarded with a seat in their medical school.

Exactly what everyone should be thinking --- if you put the work in, this program will reward you.

This is a random question but has anyone gotten into this program for this cycle with less than a 23 MCAT ? Just asking even though I already got in.

Can't speak for this cycle, but it happened in our class with several students.

I put in work for the MCAT, but did not crack a 30. what does that say???

?? like what OhNoMedSchool said about needing at least a 23. Also, from what I've read, you need at least a 3.0 at the end of the program.
If you don't have at least both those numbers then either you didn't work hard enough or you should find another career.

I don't know what to tell you, maybe the program is too high risk for you. Studying to crack a 30 on the MCAT is quite different from studying to secure 3.0+ GPA in this post-bacc program, with the latter requiring you to memorize a much larger amount of minute information but the exams are a lot more straightforward and predictable.

To everyone else, doesn't matter if a program has 10% or 90% placement rate, if you are not willing to put in the work, you will not get in. It's not like they line up 10 students from the program and randomly pick 6. If that were the case, it would have been a lot easier. The entrant stats for this program are low and some of the weaker students will struggle and fail to make the cut. Note that this is simple generalization on my part to make a point as I know of people who had very low stats but rocked the program.

This program should be your last resort at trying to gain medical school admission. The condition for admission, 23 MCAT 3.0 GPA, is as low as it gets. If you blow it in this program, it would be pretty hard to convince other places to believe that you will be able to handle medical school.

Personally, I didn't think it was hard at all to get a 3.0 in the program, I just found it to be time-consuming. But then again your mileage may vary. Those that already committed, just be ready to test the water and work very hard. To quote Dr. Bob Kelso, "Nothing in this world that's worth having come easy," 🙂) for the Scrubs fans.

A question for those in this thread that have just completed the program...first let me start by saying congratulations! Do any of you know of a person in your class that applied to go to the LECOM-B campus, and whether or not they were successful at getting in?

Totally agree with this. I always felt the material was not conceptually difficult at all, but the difficulty lies in being able to get enough passes through the material in the limited time you have.

Admissions made it sound like you needed to have ties to the area in order to get accepted there from post-bacc, but I know of several students who made it there without being from there. I would caution that this campus is probably the most popular, so if you really wanted Bradenton I would make sure that your first semester grades in post-bacc are as high as possible (and get your AACOMAS/LORs/etc in early) so you receive a conditional acceptance early in the program before they fill up. Of course this advice goes for anyone who has their heart set on one particular location/pathway.

Thanks for the response, one more question! The program states there is a guaranteed interview if you have a 23 and 3.0, so if you were to apply to both LECOM-E and LECOM-B would they both be guaranteed, or can you only use it on one campus so to speak

Well you're guaranteed the interview. During the interview day you'll rank your preferred pathway/location (which would be LECOM-B, LECOM-E LDP, LECOM-E DSP, LECOM-E PBL, or LECOM-SH PBL). They make it pretty clear you're not guaranteed your preferred pathway. As I mentioned earlier though, the better your first semester GPA, and sooner you get all your app finalized the better your odds since most pathways will have open spots early on.

You raise an interesting point though. Do you AACOMAS both bradenton and erie? I honestly don't know the answer to that question.

Is the PBL pathway harder than the LDP?

Is the PBL pathway harder than the LDP?

That's totally subjective and dependent on the individual. I'm sure some people would find PBL harder than LDP and vice versa. It all depends on how you prefer to learn.

How long does it usually take to receive a response with a User/PW when submitting an inquiry on the LECOM portal?

I put in work for the MCAT, but did not crack a 30. what does that say???
I want to say that the MCAT is what it is. I can't say I over-performed on the MCAT, because I simply did not. However, my grades were very strong in the program because I put the work in. It is my belief that your performance in this program, very similar to the course material presented in medical school, is representative with how ready you are for the real thing. In my opinion, your score on the MCAT means very little after getting accepted.

I just took the April MCAT, and won't be getting my scores until June 16th. I'm hoping that isn't too late to be accepted. There are already 60 people in the facebook group and I'm sure there are a handful more that have been accepted that aren't in the FB group.. I submitted my application early March...so all they are waiting for are MCAT scores. I want into this program so badly!

Congratulations to all of you who finished the post-bacc and are matriculating this fall! So exciting!

A lot of the people in the fb group are also kids who are ms1/2 students , or those that just completed the post bacc or those that are still waiting an acceptance !

How long did it take the portal to update after you guys mailed your checks to accept your spot? My deposit is due Friday (I mailed it last Friday because I didn't know decision letters came in snail mail) and I'm a tad worried. I send it from Binghamton NY ~ 4 hours away

Under the admission status link, it states "Congratulations on your acceptance to LECOM Erie Postbac Program! We received your fee, and will be in contact with you over the next few months."

is anybody pondering on whether to attend SGU or LECOM postbac????

Hey Guys, how long did it take to receive your letter after your status has changed to "decision has been made" in the LECOM portal?
Side note, I live in San Bernardino, CA.

So i asked Jamie whether I needed to send in official transcripts and I got a response today saying he pulled it from the AACOMAS app. However he also said "we will use the verified grades and would not need any transcript unless additional classes were taken".
Does this mean I need to send in the 2014-2015 grades? I sent my application in for the 2015 cycle, meaning only my grades from up to my junior yr were sent it. They don't have any of my senior yr courses/grades. If I send another transcript in now it would only have fall 2014 and not spring 2015 grades. Should I wait until the semester is over to send it in again or is it unnecessary?

Does anyone know of any female students that have had problems with their hair adhering to dress code? My hair is naturally very very curly and big. Reading the dress code made me question whether or not they would care.

I don't think they would care unless it's really out of control, but I highly doubt that XD. We had a classmate with big, beautiful curly hair as well, she looked happy all the time so I don't think anyone bothered her at all. Like I mentioned, the dress code is really lenient for the ladies, they seem to be only out to catch the guys.

Get all your bases covered. He did say "unless additional classes were taken." If Fall grades are favorable and it doesn't cost much to order a transcript, I would send in one now and then another when Spring grades are finalized. That being said, I think you would get a decision even before the Spring grades are in. The turnaround time was quite fast for me.

I'm not entirely sure on this but ranking LECOM-B was an option during your interview day. To my knowledge, I believe there was around ~4 people who were going to LECOM-B from our class

Is Jamie Murphy the person that reviews the applications ?

Current/former post-baccs correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe he reviews them. I believe he puts everything together, makes sure all required materials are in, etc. He's also the main point of contact for the program -- at least that's what I've grasped from speaking with him and reading what everyone else has said.

Hope that helps!

Ah, I see. So we wouldn't need to actually fly to Bradenton to interview then. Thank you

I received a response email from Mr. Murphy. He listed the things that have been received. However, I have not taken the MCAT and have not sent in MCAT scores. He didn't list MCAT in the email. He said that my application review process will begin this week or beginning of next week. Should I be concerned since the admissions committee doesn't have my MCAT scores yet?

I wondered the same thing. I just took the MCAT. He told me that even if your application is under review, no decision will be made until your MCAT scores are received. My app has been under review for over a month and will be until they receive my scores in June.

Not a problem! His exact words were "Your file is under review, but we cannot make an admissions decision without an MCAT score."

Best of luck to you on test day and admissions into the program! 🙂

I'm kind of anxious since I don't take the MCAT till June and the scores won't be released till like end of July. I feel like so many students would already have been accepted.

I'm in the same boat. I'm actually signed up to take it again in June in case I didn't do well enough. I'm so nervous that they'll be full or nearly full by then! Jamie said this about class size "The Post Bac class has a flexible class limit. It is usually not until June that we begin to get an idea of the size of our class"

So I'm hoping they still have a good amount of seats left to fill by that time but I feel like they'll be pretty full by the time June rolls around. 🙁 who knows, I'm trying to stay positive!!

Thanks for the response! Just sent out my fall transcript today, will wait for after finals to send out spring transcript.

So since Jamie told you that review process would being this week or next week, I'm wondering if that counts for the rest of us that have been complete as well. My application has been marked "under review" for almost 3 weeks now and im getting antsy :/ Dunno whether an adcom meets once a month or what

Does anyone know if accepted post-bacc students still have to apply to LECOM through AACOMAS?

You talking about for the following year for MS-1? Yes, you do have to apply through AACOMAS. So might as well get that ball rolling as soon as you can.

Hey guys, I received the mail today that I was accepted to the post bacc program. My cGPA is a 3.45 and I don't feel like sitting here and calculating my science GPA but it is for sure above a 3.3. 27 mcat. I was wondering if they send us info on housing after we turn in the 50 dollar deposit. I have an interview at TCMC masters on Monday, but I'm definitely leaning towards this program. Also can anyone who has been through this program shed some light on how difficult they make this program and how difficult it is to get a 3.0? I'm sure it's not easy at all considering I only had a 3.45 at Pitt.

Congrats! I think for housing we are on our own. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Would you guys mind chiming in about how long it took before an admissions decision was made once your file was complete? Just trying to stay patient and hopeful!

I was complete on april 8th. Status changed to "decison made" on the 24th. Still waiting for the snail mail.

I completed my application fully around march 23 and got an acceptance letter April 12th

For me, my status changed from under review to committee has made a decision, after about 3 weeks. Then I waited and waited for the mail to come. It took about 12 days for the letter to get to my house. My guess is, just b/c the status changes to "committee has made a decision", does not mean that they will send the letter out on that specific day. They probably make decisions on several applicants and send the mail out together in a bunch, and thats why we think it takes forever for the mail to come, from the day our status changes to when we receive the letter in the mail.

I'm sort of glad to hear that I'm not the only one! I've been complete for almost 4 weeks and was starting to get worried. I even sent an email to Mr. Murphy asking if he perhaps knew a rough estimate of how long it would take to receive an admissions decision due to a deposit deadline for a second-choice program. I didn't receive a response, so I've been paranoid about it being bothersome and totally regret sending it. And paid the hefty deposit for the other program anyway. I'm probably overthinking it, I hope..but anyway, fingers crossed for a timely admissions decision!

So after panning through other comments I noticed most people after they were complete get a decision within 2 1/2 weeks. I guess these are maybe the more competitive applicants? I don't think I fare high my stats are 23 mcat, 3.2 sgpa and 3.5 cgpa. I got accepted into CCOM's MA program and had to pay the 750 deposit for it on 4/30 just to be safe. Still hope we get a decisions soon with something positive (fingers crossed).
