Legacies, does it help?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you guys think being a legacy (my dad) of msucom will make me a stronger candidate?

It can help, but it isn't going to be the deciding factor.
You and your application should be able to stand on their own. Having a legacy may help though, if you get to the interview.

And please don't say at the interview when they ask.. "why do you want to come here?" An appropriate response is NOT "Because my father came here".... same goes for "Why do you want to be a doctor?" This seems obvious, but you would be surprised how many people answer with "because my dad is a doctor." or "because my dad went here." Just keep that in mind.

Any connection can only help your application.

I talked to the director of admissions at a certain medical school. I was told that the legacies had their files flagged and reviewed separately. I was also told that a LOR from an alumni carries a lot of weight. So, to answer your question...yes, although it probably depends somewhat on the school. However, if you have a 2.3 GPA and a 12 total on the MCAT I don't think even being a legacy will help. I would just make sure that they are aware of your connection and then wait and see what happens.

My letter was from an alumni of the only school that I was waitlisted at so far. Oh boo...or something like that. 🙂

I have 2 interviews, neither one from where my brother attended. In fact, when I got home from my 1st interview, I had a letter waiting from his school stating I was in qualified status, which I knew per phone last month! At least it didn't say "Quit calling us, you're cut!"

The more people you know and have on your side can only help in certain situations. Life is alot about who you know, as sad as it is to say
