Just popped into my head: do you guys think med school give a **** to legacy?

My pops did his residency/fellowship at hopkins ( ha ) but he teaches at nyu med, which is a school i'm looking at. Think it'll matter? Not that i'm counting on it...

I'm curious about this also. Almost every secondary asks this, so I dunno,

I guess you could mention that you have ties to the school (father teaches at the school). More so, having your father involved in this aspect could provide you with unique opportunities to get exposure with the field that may not be readily available. I don't know how strict NYU is on nepotism, but certainly having your dad involved does help in other ways.

based only on what I've read on SDN, legacy will help get the interview (especially true if parents are donors) but will probably not help with the ultimate decision to admit.

It may help. Depends on his "position" in the boards decisions...

Sometimes, applications ask if you have a relative that is tied to the university in some manner: alumnus, professor, donor...

I think the true influence from a legacy, though, is the connection. E.g. My mother did her residency at a certain hospital associated with a medical school, and while doing so, became friends with the dean of the medical school.

Residency is probably less important than doing medical school there. More important than either is if your parent is strongly affiliated either financially or academically with the school. Meaning if you are applying to school X, I'd rather have a dad from school Y that has worked for school X for 20 years than a dad from school x who hasn't been involved with them in 20 years. I suppose it would be best to have "from x, works with x, donates to x", but oh well.

If your parents are BIG donors, then it will definitely help. Otherwise idk, probs depends on the school.

lol, yea i don't think my pops ever donated to nyu. or ever will

if you've ever gone greek you know being a legacy ABSOLUTELY helps!

I don't think there is Greek culture within medical school.
you're greek for life... your letters follow you even when you dont want them to... but on a happier note, the party doesnt end after undergrad!!
