Posting a question here for my roommate – At what point during the residency application process is criminal background likely to come up? Evidently he has some issues with a past DUI and petty theft, though both have been expunged. Are programs likely to ask about this, at what phase, and how much of an issue is it likely to be? Sorry I can’t provide more details, but thanks for any advice.

Residency programs require a criminal background check as part of the postmatch process (although you will be asked about it on ERAS). If you get through that, you have to worry about state licensing boards. If these things have been expunged, you may be off the hook. In any case, I would consult your lawyer about all of this.

(Note, please replace "you" above with "your roommate" if this is truly the case, otherwise, as suspected, this all applies to you.)

Yeah, I actually laughed when I read my original post too. In this case it really is the roommate. He's no big fan of online forums, so I had to do the posting. Still funny though.

He may want to consult with an attorney about the technical correctness of answering those questions. Otherwise, I would think that if they ask for prior arrests or other malfeasance, he would have to answer in the positive with an explanation of what had happened. If he did not, he could void his residency contract should they find out.
