my husband and I have not been together for awhile.
I do not receive income from him for personal reasons, and I will not get alimony even if we divorce.

How is my situation treated in med school?
Do we need to get legally separated to show separation?
Do med school treat married couples as married couples regardless of the separation situation?

If you haven't lived with your husband for the last six months you are considered unmarried for IRS purposes anyway. You will likely have to fill out additional verification paperwork after the FAFSA with your school if you are informally separated. Legal separation is not a requirement.

However, it won't matter much as you will likely get the full amount of federal loans possible. At worst, you won't get the $8500 in subsided Stafford loans the amount will be an additional unsub Staffords.
