I got the EK 101 verbal book the other day and did about 4 tests. At the end of each test I have about ten minutes left! I know that a lot of people have a problem with time on the mcat verbal. I cant help but wonder that ek verbal passages are shorter than the mcat ones. Also, i have been consistently getting 11's and 12's on the tests. Is EK verbal easy or am I pretty good at verbal? I would really appreciate any input from people who have actually taken the mcat and done EK 101. Other's opinions are extremely welcome as well 😀

EK 101 is a pretty accurate depiction of the real deal. The only thing is that their tests are still at 60 questions and 9 passages where as the real deal has only 40 questions and 7 passages. they might have changed this if they came out with a new version, but the one I had (which was pretty recent) was still in the old version.

If you are doin well on EK 101 you will be just fine. Another thing to keep in mind is that its in a book, not reading from a computer screen. Some people have trouble transitioning from a book to reading on a screen, so make sure to practice with AAMC tests on line so that you can get the feel for reading on the computer. Overall, you are doin the right thing pracitcing with EK 101. practice practice practice.

good luck.

FYI, they just recently came out with a 2nd edition (about 3 weeks ago). The only change from the first edition is the reorganization of the passages into shorter tests, but content is exactly the same with the exception of 1 new passage in the warmup section.

The 2nd edition isn't out at many bookstores yet, I ordered it from examkrackers.com for around $52 including tax and shipping.

Yes, I got the 2nd edition last week in the mail. It is like you said the same passages but formatted to the right length (40 ?'s 7 passages). However the monkeys that made this book forgot to change the score conversion chart for the new exam. I made my own conversion chart by dividing the each score by 1.5.

Thanks for the reply ryserr. I do have the new version and I just didnt want to have a false sense of security regarding verbal. You are right about the book vs. computer screen, I am going to take 5 aamc exams starting three weeks from now. I am gonna do kaplan till then.
Turkelton, as for the conversion, I use the percentages to calculate my score. For example, say I get 35/40 thats like 87.5%. 87.5% of 60 is 52.5 that comes out to 12 from the old conversion chart.

Don't worry about it. I practiced on EK and now I've moved on to AAMC. I'm finishing AAMC practice tests (verbal section) with 10+ minutes typically. I guess I owe that to EK ... basically I trained myself to take about 8 min/passage or less. Usually took about 3 or 4 min to read (I read it word for word) and then an equal amt of time to answer the Qs. Anyway, you're doing better than me, I wasn't that consistent- scores about 9 to 12. AAMC is MUCH easier! It seems like the bastard child of EK & TPR. Somehow, it's just not as tricky.

I try to not go faster than 7.5 min on each passage, but there are some that i get through in under 6 mins! I am like wtf!?! this shouldnt that fast, thats why I was worrying about ek being easier. Although I felt that kaplan was easier than EK as I was hitting 13's on those. But thanks for the input man, it kinda put my worries to rest a little.
