Hypothetical Situation:

If I got a 31O in May but I'm currently reviewing for a re-take on July 16th, would you recommend a retake? My breakdown on my first test was an 11/10/10 for P/V/B. I just noticed an open seat so I'm trying to decide whether or not I should give this an honest shot. I haven't taken a full length exam since my exam but I recently went through all of the Chemistry content, and I think I'd be able to go through all of the other stuff within these two weeks. Worth it or too much of a stretch?

P.S. My practice scores were about a 32, but I'm feeling a bit more confident with the material now that I've taken the exam once.

Also, I submitted my AMCAS application already so I'm unsure how a retake would affect how schools would consider my application.

Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks guys.

Your score is definitely fine. Yeah, it's not necessarily above average for matriculants, but it's still fine. And getting a 10 in verbal is certainly a plus. If I were you, I would not retake, but I think we need some more information about your ECs and credentials. Basically, you're MCAT score will be sufficient but your GPA/ECs will need to be a bit above average to really get the acceptance.

Appreciate the quick reply guys. I posted my stats a while back in a separate thread so here's a copied-and-pasted version of it:

Stats:
At Cornell, just finished 3rd year.
AMCAS Cumulative GPA: 3.67
AMCAS Science GPA: 3.58
AMCAS Non-Science GPA: 3.94
MCAT: 31O | P11/V10/B10 (Should I retake?)
Did about 700 hours of clinical research at Weill Cornell helping with study on atrial fibrillation surgical repair procedure called Cox-Maze.
A semester of lab research studying memory consolidation and discrimination in mice.
Student Advisor (RA-type) position in dormitory for year, second year beginning this upcoming fall.
80 hours as Emergency Dept Volunteer at local hospital, serving as research intern for clinical research.
Teaching Assistant for Biochem.
Week-Long Externship at LIJ Shadowing GI's.
Tech Chair for two clubs (one premed, one honors).
Typical office job for approx. 40 hours.

I also had an alcohol-violation related IA situation as a freshman first semester undergrad that I did explain on my submitted AMCAS app, but I wasn't sure if the average MCAT score + this violation would shoot my chances. Hence, the consideration of re-taking the exam in two weeks.

Thoughts? Once again, thanks.

You have a solid score already. There's no point in retaking. Furthermore, you would be going in completely unprepared which increases your chances of doing poorly. Scoring worse on a retake will hurt your application.

A good MCAT score will not alleviate an alcohol related situation. They're two separate things and should be dealt with separately as well.

Sorry, I guess my phrasing was off. I wasn't sure if my score was too mediocre, such that it, along with an IA, would certainly write me off from interested schools. I have dealt with the IA already, and was just curious about this MCAT part.

Please do not cross post. Your post in the Retake thread has been moved to here.

Tried to delete that post in the Re-take thread. I didn't see any activity there and I wanted to try and get an answer before that seat for 7/16 would close up. My apologies.
