Ok, cheesy title and I can't pretend that I don't have a personal interest in this BUT, lets all decline the schools we are not going to go to so the waitlists start to move.

For me this means I have declined positions at RVC in London, Western and withdrawn my application to Missouri. Hope that helps some people out:luck:

It is hard to give up options/make this decision, but, I know that I want to either go to Davis or Edinburgh. I don't want to ask anyone to rush this process, it is a huge decision, but if you know where you want to go let other schools know you're declining PLEASE.

THANKS and good luck to everyone😍

Thanks so much for posting that WildZooVet!!! As someone whose career lies on 2 waitlists and zero direct acceptances the agony of waiting has officially started killing me. As an obsessive planner I am making plans to make plans about what Im going to do if I get a call in August.. Please dont make me wait until august guys! Im twitchy already. :-D

Agreed! I'm giving up Western, and taking my name off the Ohio waitlist. Accepting my position at Iowa State (while hoping that I still have a chance at Davis)!

Great! Now decline Davis and go to Edinburgh with me! If someone else picks it first, I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon!😀

Done! Removing myself from the waitlists at Ohio and Michigan, and declining Penn (IS).

As a side note, what is everyone's opinion on the best way to do this? Phone, letter, e-mail? I lean towards telephone because it's the quickest, but a negative is that it isn't in writing and you are depending on the person who answers the phone to do what's necessary.

Don't most of the schools wait until April 15th to start calling alternates any way? Since that is the deadline to decide, I don't think it will make a difference if someone declined today or in 2 weeks. You can't hold on to your spot past then unless you send in a deposit- and I sure hope people aren't sending in deposits to multiple schools! Does this usually happen and I am just not aware of it?

some schools do call before the april 15th deadline (look at "off the waitlist" threads) so it does help those who got in at another school, so they don't have to send in a deposit if they hear from their desired school early enough.

i think the reason why they say that you'll probably hear after april 15th is b/c a lot of people probably don't make their decisions until around then (especially those waiting for finaid packages)...

Some schools specify which method they prefer, but I think in general it should be in writing, and email is the quickest, so I would do email.

I sent my decline into Illinois already. I need to send in the wisconsin letter and get myself off that waitlist along with Michigan, Kansas and Washington. As of now I'm forced (my mom) to hold my davis position hostage for a few more days....

LOL, you inspired me, I finished taking myself off my two waitlists, and I sent in a decline email to Malcolm Keiter at Penn, sent the decline postcard to Illinois, and am trying to figure out how to decline OK State! I prefer putting it in writing because I have really crappy cell phone service at my house, and don't want to be running around trying to get reception while I explain to admissions why I won't be attending.

I have to one up WildZooVet here and plead with the 2 people who got accepted to UGA from Delaware....Okay you got in this year thats super but you probably have alot of stuff you'd like to do before you start vetschool (travel, watch TV, earn some extra cash), so if you just go ahead and ask for a deferral for next year and that way I can get called back from the rejection list that would be super....umkay🙂 Thanks a bunch.

I think if they sent you a letter, that it is best to mail back the portion declining your acceptance (ie Western), otherwise email or a phone call is fine. Of course this is just my opinion, and while I do sincerely appreciate the time any school spent looking over my file and accepting me, my hunch is they don't take the rejections nearly as personally as we do.

 You are so right! I was a bit stressed writing the e-mails to Penn and Ohio to not make it sound trite and uncaring, but then I realized that they don't care. I was polite and to the point. It is hard though, I really appreciate the offers and the time they took to interview me and review my file and such!!

I know that most people just got their UF letters today, but I hope the alternate list starts moving. I feeling a bit anxious!!😳

I agree that if you KNOW you will not be going, let schools know so others need not live in limbo. Myself, I am still holding two of my OOS slots, until I know for absolute sure what I have to do, sorry. As to it costing money, some schools require a deposit, some do not. I expect a lot of people are going to be getting nice letters and e-mails toward the end of the month when most decisions are finalized, but I personally know of two people who recieved calls mid August to come play at schools, one even a day or two INTO classes! There is always hope people. Good luck! GeeQued I am going to come out and personally kick your butt if you stay at Davis, recent surgery or not! 😡

I'm declining Tufts and Ohio State so I really hope that helps those of you who are still waiting.

EqSci - Both schools had forms to return with our decision but I personally just felt like writing a letter/thank you note/explanation to go with the forms. I just felt like everyone was sooo incredibly warm and helpful at both schools and that they all put so much time, thought and effort into the whole admissions process. (Plus, I'll always have a soft spot for Ohio State since it was the first school that accepted me! I'll never forget that phone call, ever 😍)

I think (aside from not getting in at all, of course) that is a person who is on the wait lists worst nightmare. Can you imagine packing up and moving to a state across the country with your family in a days notice only to arrive and have missed orientation and the first two crucial days of classes? I know you guys are all as nerdy as I am.. Can you imagine missing "syllabi day?"

I wasn't accepted at Ohio, just waitlisted, so I didn't get a form. And Penn doesn't come with a form to decline, just for accepting. But I sent e-mails and got replies, so it works anyway! I agree with you, I would have sent the form if I had gotten one and then followed up with a note. It's hard to turn down such amazing offers, isn't it??

I know! It's like a bitter-sweet break-up... you know it's for the best, but it hurts just the same! 😎

I'm not staying at Davis, only way I'm going to Davis is if they offer me a nice chunk of scholarship money or a certain someone in my life says they'll pay for everything if I go to Davis. My parents just want me to wait and "think" over my decision for a few more days. Are you still thinking about Wisconsin cause I'll come kick your butt if you go there and leave me with no one to complain to about how much extra money were spending.

Double post sorry 🙁

So far I have declined Tufts(OOS) and Purdue(IS). I hope that helps some people out.

not that i'm glad you aren't going to Purdue elefante..but i am! lol I'm on the waitlist there and you being IS really helps since it's my IS as well. Congrats on your other offers though!

but I personally know of two people who recieved calls mid August to come play at schools, one even a day or two INTO classes!

Seriously? They received a call AFTER classes started? Where?

Well I don't know about in August but I do know of a person who was on the waitlist and was accepted mid July. In other words there is still hope!! Well that's what I keep telling myself. I can only hope that I get a call and if that means on the second day of classes then... halleluiah!!! I'm going!!! Hehe..I hope we all get that special call!

😀

I just had to give you grief, its what I do. Like you, I am not putting all my cards in one basket, but I am planning to do everything in my power to go to MN. I would not blame you if you had an offer like that to stay at Davis, even if it is California. In my case it may have as much to do with finding an apt that lets me keep 4 dogs one state vs. another. When my financial aid packages come through will be the final deciding factor. No, I am still going to MN, and will make the final commitment in a few weeks.

When are you planning on moving back? I haven't given Davis a yes or no yet but Minnesota received my deposit today. I think it will be difficult, not impossible though, at either school to keep 4 dogs but craigslist seems to have the easiest to find places if that helps. I'm flying back in June to look for a place and moving in end of July/August. My tough challenge is finding 2 homes, one for me and one for my horses.

Should we be getting financial aid packages soon?? I'm a firstimer for dealing with fafsa so I have no clue about any of it.

Hey lets take this off the list, as others are probably getting PO'd about our private convs. fun as they are for me. PM me, or through the facebook site for MN, I have a feeling we know who the other is there. :hello::ninja:

Seriously? They received a call AFTER classes started? Where?

At one of the OSU informational sessions this year, Dean Sander said that the school actually called someone on the first day of class to say that a spot was open. No idea how this actually happens... I guess someone just decided not to go after all? Maybe some sort of personal emergency.

Who knows...I just hope it doesn't happen to me! I have a feeling that starting vet school would be stressful enough without the added ordeal of having to move to a new state in a day's notice.

Basically if someone doesn't show up at the start of term and there is a seat open. I have been told it happens more often than you'd think actually!

Hey just bringing this back to the front as people make final decisions.

From what i've heard, some schools still wait til after april 15th to start calling about invite off the waitlist... i know CSU is like this, or at least that is what they told me.

LSU is emailing people, and their waitlist is moving. I just got an email informing me of my acceptance, but will be calling to let them know i will not be attending. They have also mailed information to me with a decision paper, which i will also mail to them with a letter of explanation. They were great through this whole process, and i think some ad coms really like to know why you chose not to go to their school. Also, if you decide later that you want to do n externship, you dont have a bitter taste in peoples mouth, although, it is highly unlikely they will remember your name, but in some cases, people remember everything lol...

Good luck to everyone deciding.

a few nights ago i tried to sit down and write a decline email to a school, and then i was overcome with doubts. just couldn't burn the bridge. that's how i am about decisions thought.. will probably wait til the last minute.

Well your probably better than me, ask me one day if Im going to Davis or Mn and it wont be the same as the next. The 15th is coming way to close.

Anyone know if I already sent my deposit in the Mn but end up taking the seat at Davis do I just send an email/letter stating I'll be declining my seat.

:help: Can some one tell me how they go about contacting alternates, do they call, send letters, emails? I got an email from Iowa a few days ago saying that they will be moving down the list started around Apirl 20th because decisions have to be post dated the 15th. I have been waitlisted to 3 schools and can hardly stand the suspense. :bang:

It really depends on the school, but it seems like it's either a letter, or both a phone call and a letter, from many of them. I'm sure there are some out there that use email. You might want to contact the schools where you're waitlisted and just ask. They'll tell you.

I know that Purdue told me last year they send letters until later in the summer. At that point they call so they can speed up the process, but I think that is into July and on.

LSU uses email and the online status update system... followed by a letter...

thats about as specific as i an get, as for other schools, i'm not sure on what they do...

I will be declining my OOS spot at Oklahoma. Good luck everyone!

Sometimes I am so tempted just to start a thread called, "IS ANYONE DECLINING DAVIS!!!" But that would be rude and against the nature of this forum. Plus, I just started a thread called "PERSPECTIVE." It is so much easier to give advice than to follow it.:smack:

Declining an OOS position at Kansas State, and taking myself off the OOS waitlist at Mississippi State and the IS waitlist at Illinois. Good luck to everyone on a waitlist!!!!!

I've noticed that there are posts for who is declining which schools on mutiple threads and it would be really nice to have it all in one place. I should have named this thread something less ambiguous, so I am officially changing the unofficial name of this thread to:

"SCHOOLS I AM DECLINING"

If you have posted your declines on another thread, and see this, please be so kind as to post them here as well. Cheers.😀

Sent in the forms yesterday :scared:

Declined: Tufts

Declined spots at Kansas State and Ohio State. I hope they get people moved off the waitlists soon! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear.

Sidenote: for those of you who have declined spots, did anyone else have a really hard time doing it? I mean, UF has been my first choice for a long time, but it was still really scary to fill out those forms and decline my spots! I kept freaking out that I didn't fill out everything correctly for UF or something. Maybe I'm just paranoid...

I heard an NPR report the other day talking about how finances are forcing a lot of students to attend state schools rather than going to the expensive private schools they have been accepted to. Am I a terrible person because I am hoping that some Cornell acceptees and then waiting list people decide they can't go and Cornell has to make offers from the rejected list?

I'm going to decline OOS spots at Illinois and Oregon State, and I'm taking my name off the waitlist at Ohio State.

It's definitely painful to turn acceptances down seeing as though how hard we worked to get them...

I am in the process now of drafting my decline letter to RVC. I hope it goes to someone who deserves it -- who has been hoping to be a veterinarian as long as me and someone who wants to take advantage of everything London has to offer.

Skillet, I have SUCH a hard time declining! I want to go everywhere that has accepted me because if they believe in me that is enough for me to reallly like them 😀. Its like, even though I have known in my heart that I wouldnt be going to RVC once I was accepted to Western and UTK, I have had a very difficult time just saying "no thank you" EVEN THOUGH I SINCERELY want this spot to go to someone else who wants it just as much as I did.

Bunnyslippers that is a very good point too. I can say without a doubt we HAVE worked hard to get here and that makes it tough too!

Ok starting tommorow, I have the feeling that is going to explode, along with the off the waitlists thread. So lets hear about it guys.

And yes, although this was posted on another thread, i did also find it really hard to decline my acceptances, especially because my position is still so uncertain and we did work so hard for them, but, like I said in the perspective threads, vet school is just a tool to becoming a veterinarian, and you only need to/ only can ance go to one school. So keep your acceptance letters, you earned them, but, let the schools know your not coming. Please. (Yay for really excessive run-on sentences!)
