that the blocks are different depending on how well you do on a previous block...so as many people have said if your last block is hard as all get out you most likely passed. Now lets say you are me...and your last block (tomorrow, by the way) is somewhat easy to easy...then do you still have a chance of passing or are you screwed?

You're talking Step III, right?

I assume that because you are talking about a two-day test. It's just that hardly anyone talks Step III around here.

no...some people have said that step I is like this too (even though I'm not sure it is...)

I believe that Step III is the only test that changes based on your performance. (But I could certainly be wrong.)

I really do not think that this test "adapts" to your abilities as you go along. I may be wrong but I think I even remmeber reading something about this directly from the NBME and them considering making the test adaptive in the future but not now.

I really think that there are like 20 or so different versions of the exam out there and you get one version. This way your performance can be compared to others who had the same version of the test as you. And the means for the different versions can be compared to each other (ANOVA style) to see of there are major dicreptanices. This seems like the most fair way to do it.

Of course, this is all conjecture as nobody really knows the secret inner working of the NBME, but this would explain why some people felt like they had similar exams. I think that the questions you will get are predetermined when you sit down at your station. your fate is selaed at that point so to speak.

So dont worry about how hard your exam is. Just do the best you can on every question. No need to freak yourself out more than you already are.

Good luck tomorrow.

My last block was the easiest, in fact it was the only one I felt good about. I am screwed f your theory is correct but I don't buy into med student myths.

Ok...then my mistake...I swear that someone had mentioned that it "may" be adaptive (even though I know I read it wasn't). I'll be taking the bad boy (or girl in one posted case) tomorrow. Thanks everyone.

and thanks Puck!!

NMBE website specifically said that it is NOT an adaptive test.

that most likely is a rumor. it went around my school also until our school big wigs squashed it.

later

The level of difficulty regarding your last test has NO correlative potential to your P/F status.

I can personally guarantee you that I passed and my last block was my easiest.
