I think it's interesting that you're more worried about insulting Owl by calling her a moderator, than you are about insulting the mods by calling Owl one of them 😉

The above is meant to be taken in good humor, not as mean spirited nor as a jab..

...unless perceived as directed against Owl, in which case should be taken as both mean spirited and intentional.
Thank you.

common womansurg,
she IS planning to volonteer in the OR this summer, i don't see why she shouldn't have enough experience to moderate questions from real medical students and residents. +pissed+
maybe she will even moderate a case like you or Voxel. i say you better watch out...

What? Owl's a moderator now? When? Do you guys just hand moderator status out to anyone now? Geesh. Blue light special on moderators these days.

Oh well, back to sleep.

OWL, I think people may be teasing you (including myself) because you don't care when the real residents on this forum tell you to ask your questions in the pre-allo or pre-do forum. most questions that you ask in the pre-med forums will usually be qanswewred by the very same residents. believe me, they are here to help, but you have to respect teir space. for many of your questions, try doing a search of the residency forums, they contain a wealth of info. s

Hi Jessica/Owl-

Just to offer some advice- I am graduating from medical school in May and have matched in surgery, just to let you know who I am. I give you credit for doing research on potential careers. I was working and hanging out with my friends in high school (and I don't regret that one bit. However, medicine is a field where you really work your way up- I found it to be very hiearchial early on, and I didn't understand why at first.

Now I know why- through college, and especially medical school, you acquire an enormous amount of material in a very short time. It is rigorous, intense, not always nice, but an absolutely fascinating field to be in. What I am trying to get at is I have noticed recently the huge gap of knowledge base between me and my classmates versus medical students only 3 years behind us. I'm not knocking on those younger/ behind me- we were all in that position at one point, but the fact is, it can be difficult to communicate what I know/see/do now to someone who has not yet begun to learn about it.

People like womansurg, Kimberli, and droliver have offered incredible advice and help to people on this board over the last several months. However, I'm going to be a PGY-1 in surgery in 3 months (and if I am not mistaken, they are at least 3-5 years ahead of me in training), and I'd be intimidated asking them some of my 4th year student surgical questions, because they would be like icing on the cake compared to the things they know.

So who is the right sort of person to ask? The people directly ahead of you. You have said you are going to college in the fall- if you decide to do so, you would be a pre-med and find people with interests/ideas/experiences very helpful to you in the pre-med forum. Not to say that reading on the graduate forums is not of any use; however, you are jumping over several years of more learning and experience than you would beleive possible. People who are completing what you wish to in 1-2 years (the pre-meds) will be able to relate to what you are looking for much more so than us who did those things nearly a decade ago.

Good luck
-F.C.

Everyone- I'm surprised that this whole Owl thing has gone on for as long as it has. The girl's behavior is bizzarre, she seems unable to clue into subtle (and not so subtle) messages about what's appropriate and what isn't. The messages continue week after week- and week after week she gets posts like Cleopatra's to no avail. There is pathology at play here my fellow physicians. And, had I paid more attention in PSY I could tell you what it is....

I have taken all of that into consideration...I do post at the pre medical forum at times, mind you..but I don't think that pre-meds would be able to answer some of my questions that only residents/attendings could answer...an example is how is the lifestyle of a transplant surgeon...?...the pre-meds could offer their best guess...but they would refer me to the graduate forum...and I do my own independent research...I come here to get my q's answered only after my research attempts have failed...and when they do answer my questions I am grateful...but that doesn't mean it will stop the questions from coming...if you expect that I will ask and be content with just one question and post-no-more...then you're sadly mistaken...

oh...and by the way....isnt psychology, not pathology, at work here...? pathology hasta do with the dead...and I am far from dead...psychology hasta do with the behavior of people...among other things...

OWL,
trust me your questions will get answered in those forums- just check out how often Kimberli and Womansurg reply to posts having to do w/their field. pathology in the medical field doesn't just mean dead people but underlying disease as well. ok, i will now stop bumping up this thread.

BTW Foxy Cleopatra-congrats on matching, and good luck next year!

Owl,

The word pathology was being used properly.

It's obvious that you don't believe it, but as everyone is telling you your questions are appropriate for pre-allo, not the residency and specialty boards. A carefully selected question around here every once-in-a-while might be okay, but the volume and types of questions you have been asking really don't belong here.

You're not exactly making friends with your posting here, and, if you'll notice, you're getting more posts poking fun at you than answering your questions. You're actually going to get better responses in pre-allo, and, as has been mentioned before, the residents do browse & respond in pre-allo.

Jessica,

When you first came here I felt that everyone was giving you a harder time than they should; however, your ignorance and immaturity is bothering everyone, especially me. Look up pathology before making another post like the one above.

You repeatedly ask pointless questions. You might as well ask how much you should pay the receptionist at the desk of your office or if you should provide comprehensive health insurance for your nurse; if so, what type? Do you know how do perform a search? The questions you ask have often been asked many, many times before. Your inability to use the internet to find a physician salary survey tells me a good deal though...

In addition to having been repeated, many of your questions are irrelavent. You are in high school, and have absolutely no idea what specialty you will go into and won't until medical school. As a high school student, you are clogging up the boards meant to physicians and medical students, making ignorant posts, NOT using the search button, and showing an incredible amount of immaturity. 😕 😱

mocking people like youre doing was done in elementary and middle school......shows your maturity level...or in this case...lack thereof...but males are more slower to mature than females anyways.....as studies have shown.....so it was a typical response of a typical male....I pity you...

oh yea...you forgot to add my quote that I live by...even in these forums...its the quote right below my name...it was right in front of your face...if it[my quote i live by] was a snake, it'd a bit ya!

Thanks Su4n2, I'm thrilled having matched and will be enjoying the next few months before residency begins. Good luck in your acceptances- sometimes great ones come late in the spring!

Jessica,

Please take some time to re-read Jason's post. He was most definitely not mocking you. He was trying to give you some advice and explain to you why people are getting frustrated with your many posts on the residency/specialty forums. You, however, responded with an immature attack.

There is a big difference between trying to please everyone and annoying people who would otherwise be happy to help you. Believe it or not, those responding to your posts like Jason are actually trying to help you.

people seem to find everything wrong with me tho....i took that as him mocking me...it seems like everyone wants me to leave permanently........i have looked in premed forums...but most are about what med school they got accepted/rejected/waitlisted on...so im not in that category!! im just starting college...theres no room for me here...but that doesnt mean im leaving....ppl tend to get so caught up these days that theey forget that every single last one of them were my age and at 'my maturity level'.....when i get into medicine.....i will try my damndest to be humble about it and not shun those who are asking what i may perceive as annoying...cause i guarantee every single last one of the ppl in these forums once asked questions like mine.....

The issue isn't so much the questions you ask, but where you ask them. There's a huge variety of posts in the pre-allo forum and your questions do actually fit better there because you are gearing up towards med school. It is somewhat amusing that you feel that you don't fit in pre-allo because you're not applying to med school yet so you go to residency/specialty forums.

People are not shunning you or make you leave SDN. They are not trying to avoid your questions. They just want you to post in the most appropriate forum (pre-allo) instead of taking over the forums that they use to discuss issues relating to what they are doing now. They want to discuss these things with others who are currently or have been in their shoes, just as pre-allo is for those who are getting ready for med school.

Also, SDN forums do have a search function. You may find answers to many of your questions have already been posted.

Hope that helps.

OWL,
some thoiughts..
you are right, rigith now the pre-allo forum is all about acceptances, but soon the application cycle will be back to normal. also i believe there's a thread called under M-1 club started by agent that discusses taking college courses and all the stuff associated with that. You may also want to read through the thousans of pages available on each forum that discuss lifestyle issues at lenght. susan
