Ok, so I just received one of those letters from a program director stating "hope you will consider X at the very top of your rank list...look forward to seeing you as a categorical resident at our institution."

Has anyone else gotten one of these letters yet? I've heard that people do receive these letters but are they sent out to everyone who interviews at a particular place or do they actually reflect that they will rank you highly? Thanks.

Yeah, I'd love some thoughts on this and in how to deal with follow up at programs in general. My rank list is still totally in the air, so I really CAN write to 8 or 10 programs that I plan to "rank them highly"...however, this doesn't seem very honest. Alternatively, I've had some programs write things like the PD above, but don't know how to take it, or how much of a response it requires. What are you guys doing regarding follow up (apart from thank you notes)?

I've heard from 3-4 different places with these types of letters and/or emails. It seems that others that I know on the interview trail are hearing the same thing from the same places; therefore, I'm not so sure that it really means much. However, I do think that your response to these probably does matter.

My (totally uneducated) opinion is that the PD would not be sending these if they did not plan to at least rank you. For programs in which I am only mildly interested (mid-list), I have written back to the PD, telling them how much I enjoyed my interview visit, but since I still have interviews remaining, I "owe it to myself to complete all of my interviews before making a final decision." I have heard from 2 places that I do plan to rank very highly. For those programs, I have written very positive notes back to the PD and then contacted the program coordinator for extra information (information on housing, realtors, etc.). That type of information is very valuable to me, as my wife and I plan to buy a house, but it probably also conveys sincere interest.

Although programs say that they do not require "second looks," I feel that you can show them that you are very interested by gathering more information. You'd be surprised at how much information makes it back to the PD's....I called a realtor in a city at the recommendation of someone from the Department of Surgery there. Four days later, I got an email from the PD saying that he had heard I was interested in local real estate and offering some additional advice. Apparently, the realtor called the person to thank them for the referral, and the info got passed up the line!

Summary is: be careful with your response; they will be listening closely.

Ive written very positive responses to every program that Im going to rank, and told programs that Im ranking highly (top halF) that I am doing so.

Isn't it too early for all this? I'm not done interviewing yet.. was hoping to put this off until after that was all done.

But in any case, who do you guys write to to ask for more info? It feels weird and like i'd be bothering the PD to write and ask that one last question that I forgot to ask on the day. I was planning to ping a resident.. but would it be better to write directly to the PD and thereby show interest at the same time?

1. Not too early to tell them what you liked about a program in a thank you note etc. Then send a follow up letter in early Feb.

2. They want to know that youre interested. Ask your question to the resident, then ask the PD too. Its normal to ask two people in a pogram to be sure youre getting the straight story.

Could someone give me an example of the kind of letter you're writing to the PD. I don't want to state something too strong or too weak. Thanks!

Definitely not too early. Many programs meet immediately following each interview to rank the candidates from that particular interview day. Due to this procedure, many programs are ready to submit their rank lists immediately after their last interview day. I know for a fact that two big name programs to which I have applied will submit rank lists before the end of January. Granted, they can be modified, but I would encourage you to be proactive. Would you rather they read your letter now, or in three weeks when EVERYONE who applied will send essentially the same thing?

how soon after you interviewed did you get these letters from the PDs?
