Letter of Appeal

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Honestly, writing an appeal letter in and of itself sounds needy and pushy; I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, I'm just saying that you might as well get over that hang-up. So just call it what it is: Appeal of Rejection, or something straightforward like that.

I think you should snail mail it with a signature and everything. E-mail kind of looks too informal.

I agree that, in general, a snail mail, hardcopy, would be the best. However, in this day-and-age, I think that email is becoming more acceptable, and seeing as time is clearly of the essence here, I might send it via email so you can be in as quickly as possible. Then you can maybe send a hard copy later, but at this stage of the process I don't think you want a 2-3 day lag because of mail.

dont most schools have a disclaimer along the lines of 'all decisions are final'? it seems like all it would do is annoy them.

you need a new top choice- the one that accepts you!

It's been known to work from time to time. And who cares if you annoy them; you've already been rejected.

While there is a 99.9% chance that all you're doing is annoying them, you might as well play for the 0.1% at this point; the end result of annoying them and not annoying them will be the same--rejection. And I'm assuming at this point, it's either this school or reapply, in which case it's a bit late to find a new first choice 🙁

i guess that's true. this is why i am trying not to have a 'top choice' at all though . . . to avoid feeling so desperate about it if i get rejected.

As others noticed, I really think you should write a formal letter. Overnight it if you're worried about the lag - that'll show even more urgency.

It's so easy to simply delete a random e-mail. It's fractionally more difficult to throw away a letter (and that fraction might be the difference).

"RE: Me love you long time"

Haha I'm like you; my top choice is whomever sends me a screened secondary followed by whomever interviews me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!

I was talking to a doctor one time and he asked where I was wanting to go. I told him I had no idea really but would probably apply across the midwest. He said "Good. You know what the best medical school is, don't you? It's which ever one accepts you." Another doctor overheard and completely agreed with him.

is this reaction to a rejection common? i never would have thought of doing this...

Send this by the USPS.

Something this formal should be sent typed, printed on nice paper, and sent registered mail. A letter conveys forethought and reason, an email conveys desperation. While both can be disgarded, a letter is much more professional and you are seeking to enter their professional school. Just my two cents though.

I don't have my schools mentally classified in order of how much i want to go to them, i have them categorized by how likely i think they are to accept me (with many of them filed under "I Have No Idea.") this basically translates to, I'll be excited if a reach accepts me, not surprised if they reject me, and happiness if anyone accepts me . . . because none of my schools are in the "Will Definitely Accept Me" file. 😉

You're way better off putting the time/effort into your secondaries. The expected benefit from your letter is realllllllllllllly small even considering how badly you want to go. If it's any consolation, MD=MD=MD regardless of which school you went to.

i think its best not to build anything up in your mind too much anyway. if you think the school is this amazing, you might be setting your expectations unrealistically high . . . if you go through all this and miraculously do get in, you're setting yourself up for disappointment the first time you realize something about the school sucks.
