I know the idea of LOIs has been discussed to death on the forum but this is not a thread to discuss the merits or efficacy of them. I will be writing a letter of interest to my top choice today and was wondering if it would be okay to email it to the school as well as send a copy in the mail? I want them to get it ASAP but I also don't want to be too informal. If I do send it via email, will a hardcopy be necessary?

I know this has been discussed before but in my searches the most recent thread I saw was from 2004, and I figured times have changed in the last decade.

E-mail as attachment. That's why I did and I felt it was formal enough (plus I've gotten positive results from doing so). Snail mail would take too long

i agree with above... email with pdf file attached. it makes it much easier to attach to your file when the adcoms go back and review it. i've done that with app updates, thank you letters, and LOIs

I sent updates and "interest" letters to school, and it was all via e-mail. I didn't do an attachment, but I don't think it could hurt to do one. I was assured my updates were added to my file, so I think it is fine either way. 🙂 Also, these letters--especially if they contain significant updates--are really good ideas, IMO.

Thanks for your input; it is reassuring to see that others don't view LOIs as useless.

This is slightly off topic but I don't want to start another thread... I didn't take classes in the fall semester, and I haven't retaken my DAT. The only somewhat significant update I have is additional shadowing hours.. But over winter break, one of the dentists I shadowed learned that I do web design on the side and asked me to revamp his online presence. Would this be something I could spin into something positive or is that too much of a stretch? It allows me to see another side of dentistry (the business side) and prepares me for what I could expect if I were to run my own practice, so I figured for a school like MWUAZ that is focused on producing practicing general dentists this could be a positive?

I think you should just stick to a letter of intent and just reiterate that MWU is your number one choice. I don't think you should go into too much detail about the whole web design thing because I think it's a little far fetched and you don't want to sound desperate. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for the quick response. I actually totally agree with you in that it is far-fetched but most of what I've read about LOIs mention updates, so it worried me that I had nothing to update. I can see how it could come off as desperate

I don't think a letter of intent has to mention updates. I think they appreciate knowing that if they give you an acceptance they know you will take the offer, so you are not wasting your time. On the other hand, I don't think it sways the admissions committee into giving you an acceptance. I think from looking at the responses in the MWU-AZ school specific discussion page that you guys are all very anxious about hearing back from them because they said you would hear back this week and maybe a letter of intent will help you ease the anxiety a little.

It definitely was therapeutic writing it. It makes me feel as if I'm doing everything I can to get in, and if I don't get in at least I won't wonder if I should have written one. I feel the same way as you do about them, but I don't think that writing one would be a negative as long as you're respectful and don't sound too desperate. Thanks for the support!

Totally agree! As long as you follow that I think you're golden! Good Luck

what did you include in the email if you attached your letter as a pdf to that email?
