Letter of Intent to Residencies

I've seen a few threads addressing Letters of Intent for medical school admission, but none addressing Letter of Intent for residency. My classmates applying for Derm have mentioned sending Letters of Intent, but is it standard for Ob/Gyn residency applicants to send these letters to their top choice program in addition to the thank you's? Besides declaring that the program is my no 1 what else should be in this letter? Thanks

No. Your agreement to participate in the match is essentially your letter of intent to join one of the programs you enter into your match list.

From my experience, this only works at your true top program. You can send them the letter telling them that you are ranking them first. It works for some programs, not for others, but it would never hurt you. I also had a surgery mentor call my (now) residency director on my behalf. Needless to say, it worked for me. Gotta make yourself stick out somehow...
