has anyone been in the situation where they had to write letter on intent, did it help to get into the school?

A letter of intent is helpful if it is your #1 choice school. Schools want to know who will definitely matriculate into their program. If the school is your #1 choice, type up a letter and explain this. Explain why it is your choice and how you fit into their program. It lets the school know you are a serious applicant. My fiance did this and he is currently a first year!

when should a letter of intent be written? how soon after the interview?

Usually a letter of intent is written if you are placed on waitlist or been in review for a long time. Right after an interview, you should be writing thank you letters to everyone of importance that you met with. For example, I met with the dean, and two professors, so I wrote 3 thank you letters.
