What is the general consensus about sending letters of interest to schools you haven't heard from? Has anyone had success from doing this?

What is the general consensus about sending letters of interest to schools you haven't heard from? Has anyone had success from doing this?

I am not sure but I sent a letter of intent to my top choice school and got accepted on 12/1

At LECOM, they tell you that you can write a letter stating why they are your top choice. I was worried that if I didn't write it, I would look disinterested, so I wrote one. Accepted 12/01. Honestly though, I have no idea if that affected my acceptance or not.
