What is the best way to ask a doctor for a letter of rec after shadowing him/her for a specified amount of time? Is this something that should be brought up before the shadowing begins? Or is it best to go through a program that does this? I ask because im sure there are many doctors who dont want to deal w the hassle of writing one or even worse, who wont write one at all

After shadowing, getting to know the physician, and the physician knows you....Politely ask if he/she would be willing to write you a strong letter of recommendation for DO school.

i think both of you two hit it on the head. thank you! if you think of anything else, please let me know!

Because my undergrad had a shadowing program and was very competitive, we were only allowed to shadow a doctor for a month at a time - we could put in any amount of hours, but it was only for a month. This had me pretty worried about getting a letter but at the end of the program, the doctor was very understanding and since I put in a significant amount of effort into helping his office, he was more than willing to write one. So just make sure you get to know the doctor and they get to know you and you should be fine! Most physicians I've talked to want to help pre-med students like you and you never have anything to lose by asking! Good luck! 😀
