Im doing an IM rotation with a really nice doc at his office. The end of the rotation is near and i asked him if he would write me a strong letter or rec, but he said what he does, is he has the student write it and then his office will just transfer it to his letter head. Im a 3rd yr, and this is my first letter, and i have no idea how i shoud write it, . Ofcourse, i will have to make myself sound like the best student, but is their some sorta basic formula i should follow. WHo do i address it to? Should letters be specialty specific or general. does anyone have a copy of a generic letter they could post that i could guide myself with, thanks everyone, peace

I wish that I had a letter writer who would have let me write my own letter of recc. The key is to not be modest, you basically have to write it as if you are the best student that you have ever worked with. For tips, go to this website:

Make sure that your letter writer prints out your letter on official letter head too. If you still have difficulty after reading that website, you can go to your student affairs, be real nice to the secretary or dean and ask them if you can have a copy of what they interpret to be a really strong letter of recc with the names crossed off it. Sometimes, your dean will look over a draft of your letter before you turn it in to the attending too.
