Is it expected for an ophtho residency applicant to get a letter of recommendation from a research mentor who only has scientific training if that experience was substantial (i.e., Ph.D. thesis advisor)?

An ophtho attending said that it is better to have a well known ophtho MD write a letter than a famous vision research Ph.D. However if you don't know any well known ophthos well then go with the research letter.
