Hey fellow predents,

I plan to apply next summer, and I have some general questions about the AADSAS letter of recommendation process.

The way my predent committee handles the letters of recommendation struck me as a bit odd. They want me to fully complete my AADSAS application BEFORE they write my committee letter. Once they see my filled AADSAS (which they will use as part of my LOR), they will write the letter and mail it to AADSAS. My questions are:

1. Is this standard process? Do most premed/predent committees write your letter once you've filled out your application, or do they start to write it before you've started your AADSAS? I'd think it'd be better to get them to write it before, because then you can submit your AADSAS to the schools as early as possible. But my predent committee refuses to do this (they say it's b/c people ask them to write it, but then end up never applying, so it weeds out unnecessary work for them). So they insist on writing it after you've already completed AADSAS. Is this standard?

2. If I complete my AADSAS and submit it to the schools without my letters of recommendation, will AADSAS automatically update schools with my letters after the finally receive them from my predent committee? Say I submit my AADSAS to schools on June 10th without LORs, and then they receive my committee letter on June 20th, will AADSAS send an updated application to schools that I submitted to on June 15th? How does that work?

Thanks in advance for your help! You guys are always really helpful.

This is not standard. My advice would be to fill out your AADSAS extremely early (like, early June) so you can hand it in to them and then get your LOR submitted by them.

Yeah, I plan to have all of the info for my app completed within the first few days of June.

It appears to be "standard" for your school.

Does anybody else's school do this?

Also, anybody have an answer for the highlighted question above?

Anybody? Help with question #2?

Dunno how your 10th, 20th, 15th reasoning goes, but yes, AADSAS will send out LOEs as they are received. Note that they're only mailed out on mailing dates (usually Fridays) just as the regular applications are, so there can be weeklong delays (for example, I have an LOE coming TODAY but AADSAS did their mail-out in the wee hours of the night last night which means it will have to wait until next week! 🙁 ).

The answer to your second question is yes.

Most schools do not do this. They request you fill out a separate sheet with similar information requested by AADSAS so they won't hold you up.

Another option is, you should already know what AADSAS asks for (because you can find all the questions online), so if you can just fill it out before June 1st and hand it to your committee to work with.

My school has this entire packet that basically mimics professional school applications...

Asks you to fill out all of the courses you took... work experience... volunteer experience... etc.

Then you have to submit at least 3 LOR to them and then they'll interview you and THEN write one for you.

I actually skipped out on my committee letter because I only had 2 LOR when AADSAS opened and I didn't know when my 3rd or 4th would even come in... Luckily both of them came in a week later 😀 I knew for a fact that it would take a few weeks for me to even schedule the committee interview and then it'll take them another month to write it. Then it has to be sent out to AADSAS and then they will send it out to the schools. Looking at this conservatively... my application wouldn't even be complete until close to the end of August!

My school requires a pdf of the completed application before they write the committee letter. But if you submit early, then chances are you'll be on the of the first complete application on their desk, so they'll do it quickly. Don't worry!
