So I'm applying to a premed research internship that requires a letter of recommendation. I was planning to ask my lab PI but I also wanted to ask him for a letter for medical school application as well. Should I ask for two separate letters or should I just request one and send them to both? It seems like I could have better letters if they were more specific but I don't want to bother him too much...

One of my letter writers was more than happy to provide two different letters for me. Just give them ample time and clarification and it'll be fine.

Just curious, would it be possible to get one of the letters as non-confidential and the medical school letter to be confidential?

You waive your right to read your LOR for medical school when you apply. So if the content of the letters are identical, techinically, you are reading your LOR. If they are different, I don't think it will matter.

I wouldn't push it; if your PI wants you to see the letter, he will show it to you.

Well the deal is this. I need to upload the letter as a pdf file for my internship application (no other way), which means that I'll technically see it. But for the letter for medical school I want it confidential...

As long as the med school LOR itself is sent directly to AMCAS, Interfolio, or Virtual Evals, then it is up to the professor if he/she elects to show the applicant the LOR beforehand or afterward. The professor always has the option of changing the letter for the actual confidential submission for med school and ACal would be none the wiser. ACal wouldn't be breaking any rules by seeing the letter that his professor sent

So after my PI writes me a letter for a clinical research internship, what's the best way to ask her to write me another write for medical school? I was thinking about asking her to revise the initial one and make it med school focused. But how much research content should be in the medical school letter? What's a nice way of asking for a second letter right after the first one lol?

This is not as big a deal as you may think. When I asked my PI for a letter for grad school, I let him know that I ultimately intended to apply to med school and asked if he'd be willing to modify my letter toward the end of my program to make it a med school letter. He said sure. No biggie.
