I am a rising M1, finishing up a gap year of clinical research where I played a significant role in closing out 3-4 anesthesia clinical trial studies at my current institution (which was my undergrad). In my exit interview, I was recommended to ask the director of the anesthesiology department for a recommendation letter and was told to draft my own letter to send to him.
In my drafting, I'm wondering what the utility of this letter could be. I would love to come back to this institution in the future for my anesthesia residency, and I know his name carries significant weight in the anesthesia community in my region. Should I be writing this as a letter of support to complement my CV when looking for research experiences over the summer? Or should I be writing this as supplementary to my eventual residency application, speaking on my research experience within the field? Any guidance is appreciated, thanks!
