Hey Folks,

So I'm confused about the letter of rec process. I'm told it's fine to have your letters come in over the next couple of weeks so long as they are in by October 1st. Looking at an older thread it looks like some schools send out interview invites before October 1. Do these places just evaluate you without all your letters, or should I start bugging my writers to write faster?

When did you ask for letters? If you asked more than 4 weeks ago then a gentle reminder may be good as they may have just forgotten. If its only been a couple weeks I'd just let it be until the last week or so in September.

To answer your question, letters are important. Most people don't care about the composite letter from your school but your individual LORs are important. While many end up being generic, places really look for letters that stick out one way or the other. I bet confidently that few if any places would send out invites without seeing your LORs.
