Yes, make sure you make it clear you want a POSITIVE reference.
NYMC needs a non-science letter of recommendation. I don't know any non-science professors very well (always worked in the science field). How do I go about requesting a reference from someone who I have never really met?

Okay since you need a non science rec, I will assume that you don't have a pre-med committee letter. So, best bet would be to send an email to the prof, just like the one I posted above, except add, "In the fall/spring of 0'whatever, I took your whatever class, in which I received an A. Then just go on and say "As I'm applying to med school this year, I was hoping you would have some time to meet, so that I could discuss my future plans and blah blah "
