Hey, I'm currently completing my third year at a university in Canada and am planning on applying in the upcoming cycle to a few US schools.

My school does not have a pre-health committee, thus I'm going to have to get individual letters from profs. I know a bunch of us are in this same position, but my classes have generally been 200+ and though I have been in to see my profs several times during office hours to ask questions, I still feel like my profs don't know me that well. Has anybody encountered any issues along these lines?

Also, does anybody know what format the letters have to be in? I know at a couple Canadian dental schools they have a specific form they want the letters to be filled out in, and they want the letters mailed straight from the prof to the school. I looked on the ADEA AADSAS website and they said letters can be sent by mail or electronically straight to them for subsequent release to specific schools.

Does that mean we our profs can just type up a note, hand it over to us, and we can just mail it in? Does it have to be official/sealed?

If we send them electronically, what is the protocol for that?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I had the same questions last semester. Not many of my professors knew me that well but I just thought about which one might be more willing to do it. From my experience if you visit their office they would be happy to do it, I was just too scared to ask.

As far as submitting them, I am pretty sure when you fill out the application you put down who your recommenders are and they get an e-mail that gives them instructions on how to send the letter in electronically.

I would use interfolio to let your professors submit your recommendation letters. that way, you know if they have written the letter and you control the delivery to schools via aadsas or tmdsas. also, you can use them for a later app if needed.

One of my science professors didn't remember me too well from five years back and didn't want to write the letter for me. I told her how hard I've tried getting into schools, how much of a good student I was back in 2006, how my TA's loved me, and that her letter of recommendation would probably be the deciding factor of whether or not I get into dental school, which were all true. She asked me if I have any other professors that can write the letter for me. I basically told her I only have a couple of professors I can request the letters from, since I'm not a science major, many other science classes were taught by TA's, and many other professors didn't know me too well either. She hesitated for a bit, but finally agreed to write the letter and told me to send her a sample of what I would like in the letter.
