Hi all,

I was a Master's student Teaching Assistant for a physiology course. One of the students that regularly attended discussion is asking me for a letter of recommendation. I would like to write it but I think one from the professor would be better.

Professor doesn't know the student. Is it a good or bad idea to write him a letter for medical school? I am myself applying as well.

Thanks!

Bad idea

Why not write the letter and have the professor sign/co-sign off on it? Seems like that would be the best for the student as they would get a quality letter from someone who knows them well but also get the authority of a professor signing it.

I asked my teaching assistant for a letter, and he suggested that I talk to the professor and ask him to co-write/co-sign it. Most of the content would be from the TA since he knows me well, but the professor will add a sentence or two and most importantly have his signature on the letter.
I think most professors are nice enough to co-sign a letter if they even recognize you from their class. However, if the professor doesn't know the student at all then sometimes its better for the TA to ask the professor for just a signature.
