Hi.
I'm applying this season for residency. I've noticed on ERAS a lot of programs I'm interested in haven't updated their requirements in line with the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training which are recommending programs accept just 1 letter of recommendation from a psychiatrist. A lot of them are still asking for 3 letters of recommendation. In many cases it kind of looks like they just haven't updated their websites (still saying they will begin reviewing applications in September) however I have seen one that seems updated since COVID-19 changed everything and is still requesting 3 LORs but it's a program that's not at the top of my tentative match list. I know the residency programs are not bound by the recommendations from AADPRT but I'm not certain how lenient programs are going to actually be about this.
I have two LORs from two psychiatrists. Is it worth scrambling for a third letter or at some of these programs where it's unclear whether or not 3 is still the standard is it worth sending an app their way with just two? If you're wondering why I don't just have 3 to begin with, I was kind of banking on my IM rotation for the third one at the advice of my career advisor at school but that didn't pan out well, my rotation was very brief compared to what it would have been without COVID-related disruptions and I don't feel there was ample enough opportunity to demonstrate my abilities to the attending given the brevity of the rotation. I have a couple of physicians in other specialties I could ask but I don't think it'd be a guarantee. Please advise, thank you.
