I was going to ask one of my professors to write me a recommendation letter, but I realized that he doesn't know much about me as a person. I did well in his class and I talked to him at office hours many times, but it was always about the course material. I vaguely recall from a conversation I had with some med student telling me that I should write a letter to a professor introducing myself and my interests before asking him for a recommendation. Does anyone know what I should include in such a letter? Thanks.

Email and ask him to meet up for a little talk. That way, you can express to him your inspiration to pursue a career in medicine and present him with a clearer picture of who you are and what you have done. Don't assume he is going to write you a letter. Tell him that you wish to talk to him so that he can assess your qualifications for med school. If after the talk, he thinks that you're a solid candidate, then ask him politely for a letter.

That's kind of how I did it. I first asked the professors if they felt they could write me a LOR, and if they said yes, I sent them information about myself, e.g. my extracurricular and volunteer activities, transcript, MCAT score, unique experiences, etc.

Good luck.
