I'm getting ready to leave my volunteer position for an internship and was wondering about how letters of recommendation work. Do I ask for them right after I'm done??? Or do I get them all at once when I submit applications???

You can't get them ahead of time. When you start to fill out the application, you list their name and contact info, and the Recommendation form gets emailed to them. Then they have to log in, and fill it out, all before the deadline!

Let them know that you would like them to write a letter in the future, and keep in touch with them as best you can (even if it's just a card at Christmas, and a visit in the spring--It keeps you fresh in their memory!)

Also, get ALL the contact info of the person who will write the letter-- address, email, phones, etc, and keep that info up to date. Get their personal email if you can, so you know you'll be able to reach them and give them a heads up about the VMCAS letter of recommendation.

Leave on good terms no matter what. Ask them if they would be willing to write a LOR when the time comes. If they say yes, let them know that the application opens in June so you'll remind them before you send them the electronic form. Unfortunately, the LORs are electronic and are not available until the VMCAS opens. Keep yourself on their minds until then. Stop by occasionally to visit and say hi, bring baked goods or fruit unexpectedly. Leaving and not keeping in touch is going to make it easy for them to forget about all the great things about you. Good luck with your internship.
