I'm confused how the letters of recommendation work when applying to vet schools. Do any schools have specific requirements for the letter or are all generally the same? During the application process, do I need to have a letter of rec on hand, or will the people I am getting letters from be notified?

Also, I'm applying for a volunteer position that asks for two letters of rec. I have experience shadowing 1 vet and have worked with another ~250 hours. My letters are coming from an academic advisor and the vet I worked with. Should I ask for a copy of this letter to keep on hand? I will be applying to vet school in 1 or 2 years..do I need to keep a copy of this letter to reuse when applying? I'm most likely not going to be working with this doctor again and dont want him to forget about me!

Thank you so much!

Requirements vary from school to school. In general you need at least one letter from a vet and at least one academic one.

Your evaluators will complete a form online that is emailed to them.

You can ask the vet to save a copy. Bear in mind that they will have to fill out a standardized form as well.

Most schools have online forms that your recommenders fill out for you - they answer some basic questions and then there is a portion where they can fill in an actual letter of recommendation. The main application you will submit for most schools allows you to register up to 6 recommenders. But not all schools read all 6. Usually one MUST be a vet (some schools require 2 - when you apply just read the details for each school) and they usually like to see a professor as well.

The best thing you can do is look into each school you are interested in and read up on the details on what specifically they are looking for - since you have the time you can email and ask questions to clarify.

I would keep a running list of the people you might use so you can evaluate who is going to be your best choices when the time comes.
