Not sure where this should go, but I have a question for the academics here.

I enjoy utilizing my schools online library as far as obtaining journal articles for various topics. My question is, once I am no longer a student, what is a cost effective way to obtain these journal articles? Right now I'm pretty much saving all of them that I can to my computer, but if I wanted to look up more, and I wasn't a student at the time, what would I do?

Ask the main author. Most will gladly send it to you for free.

Unfortunately if they're the ones that cost money to read you'd need to pay for them. Usually if you're on the school wifi/vpn you'll be able to get free access though. I know my school account is mine for life so I can always access them.

Otherwise there is this Russian site that I won't name that can access them if you copy the link into it...

Aaron Swartz would have loved you 😛

You can pay for access either as a subscription to the journal or for individual articles.

If you have an affiliation with a hospital, the hospital library may have a way for you to access professional journals.

Some public libraries in big cities have subscriptions to the big journals (JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Nature). If your public library does not, ask if the librarian can acquire a copy for you through interlibrary loan.

A few options come to mind -

-A lot of universities will offer their alumni free lifetime library access (inc online), that's gonna be your best bet unless you go to a particularly stingy one
-Researchgate is a researcher facebook type thing where many authors have uploaded their papers and can respond to your request for a paper
-Your local public library, as LizzyM mentioned
