I will be starting residency at yale after my TY. Does anybody have any tips on where I should live? I am single and unsure about life in New Haven. Where do most single people live? Is it worth living in a suburb that is closer to the city but a commute to yale? Any info is greatly appreciated!

Depends on what you want. A lot of residents live in downtown. A lot prefer Hamden (near Sleeping Giant park, 10-20 mins away depending on traffic), while some prefer the shoreline (Guilford, Branford, etc.).

There are a few residents who live in Milford.

And don't forget about East Rock, affectionately referred to as Grad Ghetto. Great markets, great neighbours, and still relatively close to the hospital.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like downtown New Haven is not a bad place for single people if so many residents choose to live there. Any one have any additional input?

I live along the prospect street which a very exciting place to live in.
Yale university has its own rental properties,I think the website is www.yaleproperties.com.
For a place around east rock go to www.craigslist.com
Hope that helps

I lived downtown right on Chapel Street in the apts just above the Blockbuster Video. It was a great place. I parked in the structure behind the building, which was very convenient. I walked every day to YNHH.
It was great to live on the green. I would walk outside and accross the street in the summer to listen to the live Jazz. Walk to all the great restaurants (BAR pizza...Oh how I miss it). Walking to work was great. I would stop by Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts on the way to work...

Well. If you are single, I would highly recommend staying downtown...You will be very happy there....

Good luck!

Mark

it's kinda fuzzy from my undergrad years, but i think there were a lot of residents/medstudents who lived in the 10-story or so apartment buildings next to the hospital. can't remember the name of the street. but it's the street that leads to the hospital from the undergrad campus...and there's dunkin donuts on one side and subway subs on the other under a parking garage/highway. on either side of this street are to 10-story apartment buildings. rent for a single was probalby like $800/month. these apts are literally 2 minutes walking distance away from hospital. the communters w/ families generally stayed in hamden. however, the 1-2 ft of snow that pours in winters make driving a mess. if u're looking to own a place, not many new homes in new haven. many were built in the 30s. there's a small section next to science hill (undergrad) that has some 5-10 yr condos.

I think it's the Crown Towers or something like that on York St.

There are actually 2 multi-story apartment buildings on York St, 2 mins away from the hospital. One is Crown Towers and the other is Madison and both offer parking to residents.
