it's kinda fuzzy from my undergrad years, but i think there were a lot of residents/medstudents who lived in the 10-story or so apartment buildings next to the hospital. can't remember the name of the street. but it's the street that leads to the hospital from the undergrad campus...and there's dunkin donuts on one side and subway subs on the other under a parking garage/highway. on either side of this street are to 10-story apartment buildings. rent for a single was probalby like $800/month. these apts are literally 2 minutes walking distance away from hospital. the communters w/ families generally stayed in hamden. however, the 1-2 ft of snow that pours in winters make driving a mess. if u're looking to own a place, not many new homes in new haven. many were built in the 30s. there's a small section next to science hill (undergrad) that has some 5-10 yr condos.
