destroyer number 276.....consider the insulin receptor. This receptor allos insulin to bind and triggers a conformational change within the receptor subunits. insulin can be acting as an:
a. enzyme
b ligand
c mutagen
d domain
e receptor

the answer is B because of the conformational change but dont enzymes go under conformational change upon binding so why cant it be A...whats the diff b/w the two?

yeah enzymes undergo conformational changes when they bind a substrate but that's not what the question's asking. It's asking you what you'd classify INSULIN itself as when it's binding to a RECEPTOR. Ligands bind to receptors - and in this case it triggers a conformational change somewhere along the receptor which causes other stuff to happen.

Also, a simple way to keep this straight is that in this context, the term "ligand" is interchangeable with "substrate" so that makes insulin VERY different from the enzyme. Hope that helps!🙂

the question is asking about "insulin"...as in "what is insulin...in which it causes a conformational change in the insulin receptor (the enzyme)"...therefore insulin is the ligand...
