Now that all the adrenaline has run out from acceptance, I am examining opportunities in practicums. Well, unfortunately the program I chose has limited options (mostly university counseling centers). Has anyone run into this and found other options in accruing hours in different practicum sites (e.g. forensic assessment).

Mind you it is only my first semester but I want to be clearly prepared for the following years in regards to practicums, future publication opportunities, possible dissertation topics, etc.

If my energy is misguided I would not mind any other tips to prepare me for the counseling psych program as well. Thanks everyone!

"practica" = plural of practicum. 🙂

What is the reason for these limitations? Is it rural or small town location? If so, you can always explore forming a relationship and then commuting to another site that may be an hour away or so. Later in the program after classwork is complete, you may be able to move to another city in the state and complete a practicum.

Ahh thank you erg for the correction. Limited due to small town. However, I am looking into other cities for different sites. I was just curious on how others have done it in the past in other programs. From my understanding the best way to find out is by asking present students in my program (which I am doing)- but I do not want to seem to overly eager so I decided to ask here.

While counseling ph,d and clinical ph,d programs often provide commensurate training, some counseling programs do still tend to limit their scope of training to psychotherapy and not provide much opp or emphasis on sub-specialities (health, neuro, forensics) or having a diverse clinical skill.

What is your sense of this program? You picked it for a reason, I assume?

I would ask other students what they have done if they had other interests. I'm sure this is not the first time it has come up and I am sure someone has done something elsewhere.

Pragma- That's my plan of action. I suppose I am on the right track then.

Erg- I was curious on acquiring more hours in general and if I were to look beyond the scope of my program I would like to get various training and not be limited to only university counseling centers. Just being curious of other avenues, not necessarily a sub-specialty. I chose this program specifically because it emphasized general psychotherapy with cross-cultural research opportunities. But it does not hurt to look into more especially since I have a lot of down time right now (beginning of the semester).
