Balanced equation: 2AgNO3 + MgCl2 --> 2AgCl + Mg(NO3)2
If 340g AgNO3 and 285g MgCl2 react, what is the limiting reagent?
MM AgNO3 = 170 g/mol
MM MgCl2 = 95 g/mol
mol AgNO3 = 340g / 170g/mol = 2 mol
mol MgCl2 = 285g / 95g/mol = 3 mol
Since 2 mol of AgNO3 are needed to react with every 1 mol MgCl2, wouldn't AgNO3 be the limiting reagent since you will have an excess 2 mol of MgCl2 after the reaction? Kaplan says MgCl2 but this doesn't seem right to me. Is my logic flawed or is this a Kaplan error?
