Linux Users and AMCAS??

Does anyone know of a way to get around Linux OS not being supported by AMCAS?

it's just incredibly annoying to switch back and forth b/w linux and vista.. I can't stand vista. would installing firefox thru WINE work? i don't want to waste time trying stuff that doesn't work so if anyone knows if there's a trick around it, maybe simply typing some edit into the terminal, please let me know!

I would try this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59, unless it very specifically blocks the OS.

what distro are you using? and also, what browser are you using in linux, firefox? i haven't done my amcas app via linux, but firefox on ubuntu has always worked fine for me.

i'm using ubuntu as well, (jaunty) and firefox.

this is the message i get:

Unsupported Operating System

AMCAS supports only Windows and MacOS operating systems.

firefox in windows works fine. i just think its silly not to work in ubuntu and i don't enjoy switching to vista, but i'll suck it up if there's no way around it.

Your browser sends a USER_AGENT header to websites that contains your operating system and browser version. Firefox and Opera allow you to change the contents of this header so that websites "think" you are using a different operating system/browser. Simply install the addon and select your operating system/browser mask from the menu.

Linux isn't really convenient for personal computing type stuff, redhat being one of the few exceptions I've encountered but then again, not necessarily an exception...just less awful.

It really depends on what you use a computer for. When most people comment about the 'hassle' of a Linux box, it's usually because it won't perform an expected Windows task (open a web browser, type a Word document, draw an Excel graph, etc.). Conversely, I would argue that it is a huge hassle to manage gross amounts of medical data using the Windows platform, simply because a graphical environment does not allow rapid user interaction (how would you copy 1000 files that start with mri123 and end in 62.nii.gz to another directory)? In Linux it's a simple command, but with Windows you would have to hand-select the files that meet your search criteria. (Granted Windows has an MS-DOS console emulator, but it is a far cry from a unix shell).

For this same reason, medical technology (MRI machines, cardiac monitors, precision surgical equipment, etc.) almost exclusively run Unix/Linux operating systems. Have you ever looked at the graphical user interface that some of these machines use? They reek of X11.

Lastly, here's a fun trivia fact for you: What was the last MS-Windows Operating System that shipped with a compiler? - Windows 95.
