Hey everyone, now that AACOMAS no longer does grade replacement I wanted to start a thread where we can post which D.O. Schools are still doing grade replacement. The notice posted on there website did say this, "Osteopathic medical schools may continue recalculating and weighing applicant GPAs per their established admissions practices. The scope of this policy change is limited to the AACOMAS verified GPA calculation."

So any news or updates on D.O. schools that still do grade replacement can be put in this thread and hopefully we will have a good idea of which schools still do grade replacement.

Thanks everyone

I honestly highly doubt schools will do this. They might look at an app occasionally from a non-trad and look at their retakes but I highly doubt they will go through and recalculate people's GPAs. That is a huge time sink.

Here's the list of schools I think will keep doing grade replacement

End of list. This is an AACOMAS change, not one done at the school level.

^^ This. schools aren't going to manipulate the data they get from aacomas. They are flooded with apps as it is.

But I personally think that as long as your gpa doesn't get your app screened out, your having done grade replacement will still be looked upon highly by adcoms.

is a 2.85 sGPA (w/ placement 3.22 sGPA) getting screened out from everywhere? Should I still apply? No MCAT yet.

I was gonna be at like a 3.1 after this spring semester and now I'll be at like a 2.6 lmfao. The fact that they could spring something like this with no warning after I wasted years repairing my GPA is ridiculous. I am completely screwed.

I'm sorry to hear that man. I'm looking around to see what's going on with this current situation too. PM me with more info, we could discuss alternative routes for your case.

could you PM as well? I am really scrambling for some alternatives as well, thank you

Send me your brief info, I may have already read your situation based on the main thread.
By application time my stats will be: (i tried to PM didnt work)
without grade replacement: 3.18 cGPA, 2.85 sGPA
with grade replacement: 3.42 cGPA, 3.21 sGPA

no MCAT yet, currently studying for it.

Sorry for the late reply. It looks like you guys will be taking hard hits with this new system being implemented. Sub 3.0 gpas are obviously very alarming in regards to the admission process. I wouldn't freak out regardless of the circumstances because there still options out there.

1. Schools like mine stated they will now take deeper look at trends to evaluate applicants. How deep, and how comparisons will be made with applicants without repeated courses, I can't say because I don't know. Just realize you aren't the only people being affected by this ridiculously abrupt implementation.

2. There are very good smp programs out there that will allow you to become physicians if you perform well. Most notable from people and friends I know first hand (3 personal friends going on 4) all went into LECOM's postbac program and are currently OMS-IIs. If all else fails I would look very deep into the program. It dictates you need to achieve above a 3.0 in the program to recieve and interview and is thought of more of a formality (unless you blow the interview or have some other red flag). My friends all got 3.4+ gpas in the program. The problem is the program has expanded and will in turn become more competitive. I can't say how much more competitive it has become because I've been out of the loop since introducing it to them. Do some research and make some calls.

3. Please direct your comments to the main sticky for this discussion is occurring there.

Time will tell what this change will mean for applicants like me. I appreciate your reply, thank you.

Just an FYI, PCOM is still doing grade replacement. Although it is an AACOMAS change, in the notice, it says that the individual schools have the right to essentially do what they want as far as recalculation.

what is your source that PCOM is still doing grade replacement

Their website

"Our admissions process will continue to be what it has been and will be unaffected by the change in the AACOMAS policy."

It says they won't change their process, i don't think we can assume that means they still do grade replacement. If they did they would probably explicitly state it like the other schools that have, i forget which tho

Their policy was grade replacement, they will continue to do that. I'm not assuming. But, call them if it makes you feel more comfortable. There are other threads where people have called and confirmed. But based on what their saying on the website and what they have done in the past, they are still doing grade replacement.

Idk how PCOM is going to do grade replacement on their own, but I do think they are; they were the only primary app I sent to DO schools where I did NOT have to mark pre reqs. I feel like this is a sign that they're going to go through and make those determinations on their own. Who knows.

Quick way to check would be was there any weird grade entries on the secondary (like standardized forms where you list courses from your transcript). If not, I doubt they will because that would require someone to manually look at your classes and do a separate recalculation. No way they are gonna do that manually.

Someone should actually verify if PCOM is doing grade replacement. That description sounds a little fuzzy. I feel like recalculating would be inefficient unless they can do it in a quick way.

i called today but they told me i had to send an email. waiting to hear back

They couldn't have just said it over the phone? It's a yes or a no answer. Hmmm ... oh well but thanks for taking initiative! Will be interesting to hear what they say.

I can't believe noone has mentioned AZCOM yet. This is taken from their website:

"To allow our applicants time to adjust to the removal of the AACOMAS grade recalculation policy, Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine will still consider grade recalculation for those seeking entrance into the Fall 2018 class. To be considered applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Submitted AACOMAS application
  • Submitted AZCOM supplemental application
  • Verified MCAT score of 507/29 or greater
  • Science and Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or greater
Applicants will need to submit their request for grade recalculation to the Office of Admissions via email to [email protected] on or before March 1st, 2018."

I e-mailed PCOM admissions, and this was the response:

"Thank you for your email. The Faculty Committee on Admissions follows a holistic approach in reviewing applications for the DO program at all PCOM campuses Our committee members look not only at grades and test scores when evaluating applications, but also read the entire application as submitted by the applicant, along with the letters of recommendation and personal statements. There are no cutoffs or minimums. We rely on the GPA received from AACOMAS. We send supplemental applications to all of our AACOMAS applicants. Our admissions process will continue to be what it has been and will be unaffected by the change in the AACOMAS policy."

The GPA entered on AACOMAS, will be received as so, without grade replacement?

Does this mean, PCOM will look at the GPA (w/o grade replacement) and re-calculate our GPA with grade replacement at their institution, when considering a student?
