MCAT: 33Q (PS 11 VR 11 BS 11) cGPA 3.83 sGPA 3.59

Undergrad: Northwestern Resident: IL Major: Psychology

I've been looking at numbers all day and I've come up with a preliminary list with a mix of schools. I tried to pick about 8 safe schools, 6 match, and 3 reach. I also included 5 schools in California for around 20 total. I know the Cali schools are all probably a reach and I'm not expecting much, but I've had my heart set on California since I was a freshman and I figure it's worth a shot.

Northwestern
Emory
Vanderbilt
Tufts
Georgetown
Dartmouth
Wake Forest
Boston University
St. Louis University
University of Miami
University of Wisconsin
George Washington
Tulane
Loyola
UIC
Rush

(USC, UCLA, UCSD, UC-Davis, UC-Irvine)

Thanks!

Take out Davis and Irvine they take basically no non residents. Replace them with UCSF, Stanford or Loma Linda if you really want to try at a Cali school.

Don't forget USC/Keck for a private CA school.

add Harvard and JHU because everyone tries their luck. LOL!

add jefferson? it's in a cool city plus their secondary is really easy

Pretty sure all of those CA schools are a waste of time and money for you...Georgetown, GW and BU are not safeties for you...the only genuine safeties on your list are SLU and Tulane (not familiar with so not sure how you stack up at your state school or Rush and Loyola).

Humor me: what do you see as your 8 safe schools? Your list is much more top heavy than you seem to realize...but if UIC is a slam dunk certainty for you, you may not need but a few more safeties...

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to add Jefferson, Penn State, and Maryland and then cut Davis and Irvine. I know you're right about the Cali schools, but I can at least try with LA, SD, and USC.

I'm pretty sure I've got a good shot at UIC, Rush, and Loyola. There are a lot of IL residents at each of those schools and my numbers are a fair amount above their averages. Again thanks for all the input.

Be careful with Rush + Loyola. Loyola isn't super favorable towards staters and even though their averages are below yours, they get 10000+ apps and are very particular about ECs and that sort of thing. Rush is also funny. Definitely a good add-in but they also look beyond stats. UIC is a really really good bet.

If you really want some more "safeties", there Rosalind Franklin + EVMS.

Lastly, I'd throw Pritzker (U of C) into the mix. Super hard to get into, but they are REALLY focused on fit so if you happen to fit then it compensates for your stats that are below their average. Never know.

Don't add Maryland - very low OOS accepted.

Look down the road in ole Virginny for EVMS and VCU. VCU is getting to be a much tougher place for the "challenged" OOS applicant, but still it is a good one.

Maryland: 3797 oos applied, 271 oos interviewed, 128 oos were accepted, 43 oos enrolled.

Doesn't seem too bad to me considering that 3,797 is on the lower end of oos applications.

Ehh, suit yourself. Those odds are pretty pitiful.

That $72k COA for OOS may give you some pause...sure does me!

pre-application problem: I need to get into medical school

Post-Application problem: I need to pay for medical school

I guess our problems never completely go away, but the QUALITY of our problems change. I would suck it up and take out the loans if that was the only place I got in.

Your initial list was extremely top-heavy, as folks told you. I'm also not sure why you're so attached to the idea of Maryland... Remember that a lot of the eastern states without med schools are going to make up a large portion of the OOS seats you're looking at, so your chances coming from the midwest are even lower than they would seem.

I would make sure you're applying to everything in Illinois, including Rosalind Franklin, which wasn't on your original list.

Best of luck, and I think you'll have a sucessful application season.

This is correct - many of the MD OOSers are from the border state Delaware plus DC with no public med schools...plus there are a few Virginians who get accepted at UMD, but those folks tend to have a close tie to Maryland...
