Dear forum community

Im making a list of schools to apply to for the upcoming 2011 year and would appreciate some input. Some of what Ive read is that my EC's can be more val than my MCAT and GPA in attempts to score a top 20 school. Took a bit of research into what schools to apply but my list is short. I would like a list of about 20 if not 25 schools and would appreciate input from experience of univ to life around campus.

Also my list is a bit limited to Northeastern schools, probably because the most input ive heard was from that area of the USA. I think I have most of the top tier noise bleeder schools that I would remotely qualify for with my MCAT.

I dont have a MSAR and cant buy one *negative luck on the torrents 🙁* because im currently on the other side of the world and fedexing would cost me roughly 300$ ... insanity!

Also, a major plus would be if the school offers an MD. MBA dual degree program

My credentials

Undergrad institution: U of Mich- Flint
MCAT: 32Q (V 9, B 11, P 12)
GPA: 3.75, Molecular Biology degree (Honors program)

Community service: Roughly 300 hours
- Feeding homeless
- Helping build shelters
- Leading groups as a sup. on trips
- Local tutoring of highschool, uni

Medical Service: Roughly 350 hours
- 200 hours in a clinic in Libya
- 50 hours in an ER
- 100 hours shadowing 2 doctors

Research: roughly 400 hours
- Worked at a private lab under 2 docs, one of whom has a Nobel prize in physiology. (350 hours)
- University lab for a semester

List of schools

Far Reach

1) University of Michigan
2) Yale
3) University of Pennsylvania
4) Harvard
5) John Hopkins
6) Northwest
7) University of Pittsburgh
8) Duke

You need more schools. Many more schools. And less competetive schools, as your list is extremely top heavy. To be perfectly honest, while your numbers give you a shot at any school, there are plenty of folks with similar numbers who don't get in anywhere. Your EC's are good, but not unique or good enough to make you stand way out. Schools like Pitt should also be considered a reach.

If you want to stay on the east coast, you should apply to Temple, Drexel, Jefferson, Tufts, BU, NYMC. All of them are good schools that turn out great docs, but aren't as competitive as many of the schools on your list (though still far from easy.)

This process is a bit of a crapshoot, and you need to apply to more schools to really have a better shot of acceptance.

@DoctwoB:
Yup aiming for many more schools. Right now that is pretty much my dream/far reach. My friend got a 36 (V 10, P 12, B 14) and went to MSU because he was waitlisted at 5 other schools.

Thanks for the honesty about my numbers, everyone has scared the crap outta me saying to even consider my list i needed a 34+. Im pretty much hoping that out of these 12 i get 1 interview. I'm still looking for other schools, where i can be more competitive, and hope to get a list of 20-25 schools, ill look into the ones you commented about !

Still looking for more, even west coast schools as my info on them is very limited.

Sorry if my post came across as harsh. There is certainly a decent chance that you will get into one of the top schools you wrote on your list, I'd say you should go ahead and apply to those dream schools, so long as you make sure you're hedging your bets by applying broadly.

On the west coast, there aren't very many schools that could be "safety" schools. All california schools are either extremely competetive, show in state preference, or both. If you don't mind going to the midwest, there are great schools that might be easier to get into because of their location. I'm thinking schools like university of Iowa, University of Wisconsin, etc.

O you didnt come off that way at all! your input added 3 schools to my list! Very much appreciated

Any ideas on some safety schools, recently updated the top post with a list of far/ match/ safety and MSU is my only safety i feel

GWU, University of Vermont

I don't know how much of a "match" Penn actually is. I think you'd want to consider UPenn a reach, it's at least as competitive as Pitt if my MSAR is to be believed.

Check out University of Virginia, UMiami, Wake Forest and UNC. Those are pretty good schools that match your stats pretty well although I wouldn't really consider them safties, more like match schools.

If money is no issue, I would add 4-5 more safety schools. If you are considering adding more schools to your list, do not add any more super reaches, reaches, semi-reaches, matches, or semi-matches. Only add safeties. I think your "far reach" category is certainly just that. Even in your match category, Ohio State, Case Western, and especially UPenn should all be considered reaches. Half of the schools you have listed are extremely competitive (low chance), but worth applying if you have the money. Not attempting to come down on you in the least, but if you had access to the MSAR you would realize this so just letting you know. You certainly should get accepted to a few schools, I just think that your current list needs a little work... Best of luck to you in the future 👍
