List: What field would you like to into

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The fact that many of you people do not like surgery and surgeons makes me want to do it more. I understand why people do not want it-- it is a long time but I have wanted it for so long that I refuse to get sidetracked.

Urology (1)•••••isn't this list somewhat useless...I mean isn't it already known that fields like surgery and dermatology are the most competitive and most sought after?! so creating a list with 11 pple wanting to become surgeons isn't so surprising....if you were really interested on which SDN personality was going to which field...you should have then made a list of SDNers with their respective interest on the side...

otherwise, this list isn't telling you anything new...I am sure that after 40 other pple pick their fields, the top fields will usually get picked.....

Hi, I'm an MSIII who went into med school interested in surgery. I am not at all shocked that surgery is #1...but....first of all it isn't that competitive...any US grad can get a spot somewhere....secondly, I'm on surgery rotation right now and it SUCKS! Not just the hours, but it's not all that interesting intellectually, nor is it particuarly exciting, particularly after your 5th trach & peg, J-tube, lap choly, etc.

Andy

Told you so:
can you see the trend?

1 urology 48
2 orthopaedic surgery 48
3 obstetrics/gynecology 46
4 thoracic surgery 45
5 general surgery 44

I have to say, that test was a dead on match for me. My number one pick, neurology, came up number one for me with a 44, followed by endocrinology which I'm also interested in. My other top choice, peds, was also one of my top matches on the test. Kinda nice to have my interests validated. . .

lollipop: Cardiothoracic surgery only compares with Neurosurgery as the most brutal field in medicine. The hours for a fellow in thoracics are, at times, ridiculous. First you must do a 5 year general surgery residency. Plus you will do 2-5 years of fellowship/research in cardiothoracics. The call is usually q3 forever. ALL of your patients are in the SICU. There are no outpatient cases. Your patients are horrendously sick and the outcomes are often poor (more than you'd like). Many people will die in your hands for an "elective" surgery. But after all your training, thoracic surgeons will often work >80 hours/week. Granted, they make an enormous amount of money and the satisfaction of the good outcomes is awesome, but their life is tough. Many of the attendings in training programs are also horribly malignant (i.e. mean). This is not everywhere or everyone but you really have to see their life first hand before you respect their time and energy. They're just a different breed. All complain of the lack of time in their lives.

mcphuguy: I'm sorry that you're only doing lap choles and j-tubes and your experience was not as grand as mine. Surgery is awesome when you incorporate breast cancer, colon ca, vascular surgery (AAA, fem-pop, carotid endarterectomy, etc), endocrine (parathyroid, thyroid, adrenalectomy), transplantation, traumatic injuries, splenectomy, liver disorders, thoracic disorders, and many more. This fund of knowledge, the diagnosis, the decision to perform surgery or not, and the difference you can make for these patients is second to none (of course, my opinion). If all I did was lap choles all day, surgery would probably not be for me (although I actually like lap choles). It's the opportunity to perform the amazing variety of cases and the knowledge needed to do the right thing for your patients. To each his own.

1) Aerospace Med (45)
2) Psychiatry (45)
3) Thoracic Surgery (44)
4) Neurosurgery (43)
5) Radiology (42)

Wo! hold up! What are those 2 surgery sub-specialties doing on my list? I ain't going out like that! Especially not after already spending 7 yrs getting an MD/PhD.

my baby's grown up so fast!!!

24 hours and 110 posts!!!

i must say that this is the fastest growing thread i've ever seen on SDN!

choker it sounds like you will make an excellent ob/gyn ;

here is my list:

Actually, neurosurg and cardiology were what interested me most. I don't even really know what's involved with nuclear medicine.

Anatomic Pathology! I can hardly wait for Gross.

Hey, not bad! 😀

Although take plastic surgery out of there....

2. General Surgery (49)
3. Colon & Rectal Surgery (49)
4. ~
5. ~
6. Orthopedic Surgery (46)
7. ~
8. Thoracic Surgery (46)***

Cardiothoracic is what I want to do. I guess it's not too bad ranked #8. Weird thing is many people told me that I should go into plastic surgery. I guess other people know me better than I know myself. 🙂 I don't want to sound mean for people who are considering plastic surgery, but for me, I always felt like it isn't a real medicine at least for me anyways. I guess people told me to go into plastic surgery, b/c I am very artistically oriented. (If that helps at all...)
Overall, I like my results. 🙂 Surgery all the way!!!

What do you do when your results show that you should be a proctologist 100%? I mean, I've been called an dingus on occassion, but I have really progressed into being a great person.

And now for the serious aspect of this post. What happened to the list where everyone puts down what they are interested in doing? I liked that better b/c I like to see what other SDNers are planning.

even though my #1 choice is either aerospace medicine or othopedics (sports surgery). and all other specialties i hate! i mean i might choose EM, if i got rejected from my #1 choice. but i'm certainly not interested in anybody's rectals or vaginas!

also it's surprising that so few people put orthopedics or aerospace medicine...

I did this last year and pathology came out number 1. This year, pathology isn't even on my list!

1 radiology 46
2 occupational med 45
3 preventive med 44
4 thoracic surgery 43
5 urology 42
6 psychiatry 40
7 aerospace med 39
