Listing faculty on app?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it standard to list the faculty you might want to work with on an MD/PhD app? What about contacting them before submission?

During the secondaries or after you get an interview invite, they will give you a chance to list possible faculty members you wanna work with. Absolutely no need to list it on AMCAS.

Thanks. The secondary I'm looking at seems to be asking that... So I guess my next Q is whether we are expected to be contacting the people we list, or if they just want an idea of where our interests lie?

No need to contact them. When you are invited for an interview, the coordinator will attempt to schedule for you to meet with these people. Pick people who you think could be potential mentors for you/whose research interests you and you think you may want to rotate in their lab.

Yah, this. Some schools try to do it during the interview; otherwise it's more of a second look thing. No need on your part to contact faculty.

Definitely don't contact them, but if there are one or two you are super interested in, it doesn't hurt to throw it into a secondary essay somewhere. I would look through the departments I was interested in and tried to work in a prof's name whose research sounded interesting to me for pretty much every "Why this school" essay.

At the school I'm currently at, I picked a faculty member doing research on a really similar topic and unbeknownst to me, he runs a small lab and doesn't have the largest reputation. It got brought up by a couple interviewers who were impressed/surprised that I knew about him. Given that I got in I assume it was a good thing...
