Did any of you list any hobbies on your applications? Even if had nothing to do with optometry?

I rescued a pitbull and spent over a year taking her to training classes and still hope to continue and ultimately get her a Canine Good Citizen Award (this is a test she has to go through to be certified).

This sounds like a weird "hobby" but it is something I am very passionate about.

What about even listing book clubs you are in with friends or through a public library?

When I did the search and also as I started writing this thread some similar ones about listing hobbies came up but they were all for medical school or something else.

Thank you.

I don't remember if I put hobbies on my app, but I just wanted to say that my husband and I have two pits and we also want to get them CGC certified!!! You're awesome! I can't say enough good things about these dogs, especially living in a city like Memphis where dogfighting is a huge problem.

Off my soapbox. 😀 Carry on, lol.

I don't normally like to comment on admissions questions because I haven't applied for 15 years now but I would say that in general, putting down "weird" hobbies is BETTER because it makes your application stand out more.

I recall that when I went for my interview, we talked about flying planes almost the whole time because I had put on my application that I almost had my pilot's license. It made it stand out more. We also spent a lot of time talking about another "weird" hobby of mine which is photographing famous people's tombstones. Nowadays, the internet makes that type of searching very very easy but in the past, it took a lot of detective work to find where an interesting person was buried so you could go and visit. That was also something we talked about a lot.

I think the key with hobbies is to list two or three. Not every single thing you're interested in.

And try to avoid putting down hobbies like "surfing the internet for pornography." That usually doesn't work well.
