Hey,

I'm not applying this cycle but just wanted to ask a question on this as it will become important for me in the next application cycle:

in the 15 list thing in the AMCAS do I list research I'm doing and a publication I may get seperately?? or do you put them in the same thing

Basically would i say:

1. Research in XY
My duties including titerring and washing dishes.
Published in the New England Washing Dishes Journal - 2nd author "XY"

-------OR-------

1. Research in XY
My duties included titering and washing dishes.

2. Publication --- New England Dish Washing Journal - 2nd author "XY"

I'm thinking this may be a fairly common scenario that arises so I'm interested in how people will be tackling this issue.
I personally think since they are related they should be in the same 1 out of the 15? But I FEAR that if all this is in the same section like the fist example then the fact that you got a publication can be easily glossed over...?

what do you all think

If you have room, list them separately.

If not, list the publication. Publication implies research. You can say something like, "this publication is the culmination of my participation in....in which I...." No overlooking it then.

I would list the publication and include the overall description of the research in the description. Hopefully you will not have an extra spot on that list of 15 that you don't know what to do with. If you do, break it up and list each separately

Understand this:
Some schools do not look at the descriptions, they only look at the title. So if your title is: Neuroscience Researcher. And your description is: Work with Aplysia on the physiology of memory storage. Numerous publications, Nobel Prize in Medicine. You might want to reconsider how you're organizing that.

ok so one person says list them seperately if i have room, but I like the previous posters response of just heading as publication but it is a scary thought that I will eventually have to organize my AMCAS with the thought that med schools (some) will read only the title

so what about a case like this:
ive been involved in a organization (campus org) for about two years now,
my first two years i had a leadership role but now that I will move up to president of the organization I recieve money....
So i know this would all go under the same spot in the AMCAS since it was a continued activity, but should I list as "Paid Employment" or "Leadership"

what about all of you guys that are floor supervisors in your college recieving stipends...is it "leadership" or "paid employment" if you recieve free housing...

In my case I am a floor advisor because i simply can't affording housing and so I feel like listing it as "paid employment" would let schools know that I have had to work besides just trying to get good grades during college ... at the same time it is a leadership role in a lot of ways and i want schools to know that too, hmm so many issues here

any general thoughts or specific answers would be apprecited and thanks to everyone who has helped

I too want to know - If you were a resident advisor who received free housing, is this a leadership or paid employment experience?

There is (I think) a drop down menu of categories. Paid employment - clinical and Paid-employment - not clinical are two categories as are Volunteer- clinical and Volunteer - non-clinical, IIRC. Research is a category and Publication is a category and there are a few others.

Publication should always be listed, and the research that spawned it can be described in "the box" if you need to conserve slots. If not, list the publication followed by the research in a separate slot.

Getting free lodging is not the same as employment unless you are required to count the value of lodging on your taxes. So, if it is not employment it might fit under the "leadership" heading.

What if you have more than one publication... Lets say you have 3, for example. So you'd use one of the 15 spaces for "Research Position" description, then use 3 different slots to list your "publications"? That would take a total of 4 slots. Is that correct?

Also, when listing a publication, do you have the title/authors etc on the heading, or in the description? If in the description, what should you put in the heading?

Thanks Lizzy!

Under "experience name" for publication type experiences, should you just simply name the journal of the publication or say something like "co-author/primary author of study published in X"
Seems trivial, but since a poster stated that most adcoms only read the title, should we try to make the title as informative as possibe?
