Living Expenses in NYC

Hi,
I am planning on going to Columbia for MPH in SMS in the Fall. However, I am worried about living and paying for expenses in NYC.

Is anyone else planning on working full/ part-time to cover living expenses or are people taking out personal loans to cover these expenses? I am looking to minimize my debt and student loans which is why I am considering working during the school year but I am worried it will be difficult to cover the cost of living. I am planning on sharing a 1 br on the upper west side...so I might save some money on rent.

Are there jobs on campus or with faculty or are grants available or is it better to work off campus?

What do students do during their practicum internships? I heard they are usually unpaid?

Also how safe is it to take the subway after class at night?
