LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To give you guys a heads-up on immunizations, one of required ones will be the Hep B vaccine. If you have not received this vaccine yet, I would try to start it ASAP since it takes a few months to complete. And yes the school will still accept you if you haven't finished the Hep B vacc before matriculation, so no need to freak. But definitley start that one soon if you haven't received the bacc yet.

Also, you guys will begin filling out the FAFSA and Fin Aid stuff within the next couple of months. As Pat Peace told you guys, the Stafford loan will not cover all of your tuition and costs for the year, so you will need to apply for private loans. This means, again as Pat Peace told you guys, that you will be based on your credit history. Thus, it is critical that you guys get a credit history on yourself, and perhaps your spouse if you're married. DO NOT USE freecreditreport.com......it is NOT FREE. By law, you are allowed to obtain a free credit report from each of the 3 major credit bureaus. The website you want to go to is www.annualcreditreport.com. This is where you go to get your free credit report. You don't need to run all 3 unless you really want to, one will do just fine. Make sure that your credit is free on any identity theft, etc. The report will only give you a rundown of your history, not an actual score. If you want the score, then you pay an extra fee, about $8 or so, but it is not necessary. Do not wait to do this until the last minute....do this ASAP so that, if there is any suspicious, you can take care of it before you start applying...it will make your life much easier.

And again....Congrats on being part of the Class of 2012 at DCOM!!!!!!!

Nope. I don't think they've sent it out yet. Paul Carney said sometime in February last time I spoke with him.

Good to have you back on SDN Rose! I was wondering where you went! 😉

haha, yeah, after I started reading past page 12 I found like 10 more updates to the list.... Oh well. At least we have some new people to add to it! I hope you all are getting as excited as I am because we are gonna have a blast come July 30th!

Has anyone else thats been accepted gotten the matriculation packet or whatever it is in the mail in the past few days? I need to go to the doctor and make sure all my immunizations are up to date.... woo hoo....

got my packet today!! already did the background check thing since that took about 1 minute to do.... and but the rest will take some time 😳

Syncope, where in CO are you from? Did we interview together? I miss CO so much. I've been dreaming about Vail. Sucks not getting to go this year.
I'm actually from Chicago, IL...but I end up going to breck/keystone/vail around twice a year. I already miss it 🙁

You still have 2-3 mo left of the ski season..you can still make it!

I know, but it's so expensive. And, if I go I'd want to stay for a week at least, but I don't have any more breaks at PCOM so it would have to be for just a weekend. It's not really worth it.

Yea that is true...I wasn't aware that you have already started school...sorry

I'm not rich or anything, I'm just fortunate to have a best friend who's family is very wealthy and they have a winter home up in Breck, so the only money I really spend on is lift tix and personal stuff. I always buy tickets prior to the season through some local fund raising events and they are almost 40% off window price

I haven't started actual med school yet. I'm just a biomed at PCOM.

That's awesome. It always helps to know someone with a house near the mountains. My first few years in CO I always had a five mountain pass. But, the past 4 my boyfriend's parents lived in Eagle (which is just outside of vail) so I'd always go stay with them when I wanted to go. His mom worked at this place that had these medallion things. They work as a lift ticket at any mountain in CO, which was pretty sweet. I always just went to Vail though, I loved it there. I wish I would've gone to Crested Butte at least once. I heard it's awesome. You should go next time you're out there.

Vail is too family oriented for me, and it seems that most beginners tend to start off there...so I tend to avoid vail. What we usually do is ski Breck or Beaver Creek during the day ..take a few hours rest and then head up to keystone for the night skiing! However, that Swan Mountain road is scary at night while its snowing

I haven't been to crested butte, but I've heard nothing but good things...you should check out heavenly as well, it is very good.

But the best in NA by far is Whistler, I can't wait to go there

Haha, JLH... I dont know how you keep getting bumped off the list... Wow, its really starting to sink in that we will be starting med school in August!:banana:

Oh and the Hep B vaccine takes 6-7 months to fully complete. You get one shot at the start, a booster a month from that, and a booster and a check to make sure your body built up antibodies to it 6 months or so from the second shot I believe. Good stuff. But as long as you have the sequence started as nascardoc said, you'll be ok.

When I visited the school for my interview I saw a ton of churches, but does anyone attend a good contemporary (protestant) service near Harrogate that they would recommend?

i'm about to sign on for a new contract and am on hold to make sure my new phone will work down there. do any current students use tmobile?? i'm getting a blackberry, and their only concern was that i'd be roaming on att, so the internet fxns might not work. any input??

😀thanks!

p.s. MJB you've got me hooked on the pearl. 😉

I had tmobile and didn't get service when I came to visit, but the newer phones supposedly should still work here. I went ahead and swtiched to At&t and have an iPhone and all parts of it work fine(including internet).

GSM is fishy in rural areas...that goes for both T mobile and ATT...your best bet is to stick to CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint. CDMA also boasts the EVDO Rev A speeds...which is almost 10x faster than anything tmobile or att can offer in terms of data transfers....

I have sprint and use a treo phone. I tether it to my notebook all the time via bluetooth, so I have internet anywhere with download speeds up to 500kb/s..which is faster than my home DSL..no more worrying about hot spots 🙂

Verizon and Sprint have the same data transfer quality, however, Verizon almost charges 2-3x more for the data option. Verizon would also have a slightly better call quality

you clearly have never experienced 3.5G networks 😉 I get upto 900kb/s on ATT 3.5G (3G), it's sweet

on the cell signal issue, I noticed that I did not get ANY signal in the student housing, is that normal? I have ATT...

The only downside to Verizon is that if you ever plan on going in to Middlesboro, KY (where you'd do most of your shopping) it doesn't work there. I live in Middlesboro and had to switch to AT&T because it's a Verizon dead zone.

I think it depends where in the building you are, unfortunately. Cell phone reception for a lot of people is just terrible in some places. If you go down in to Cumberland Gap, the town right below where the student housing is, you'll be lucky to get a signal with any provider in about half the town.

My experience (granted, it's been a while since I had Sprint) is that AT&T blew Sprint out of the water in rural coverage.

I'd love to support Sprint as they are my "hometown" company, but their service was just horrid when I was with them...I'd like to think the problem with dropped calls and just flat not having a signal in KC had to do with everyone in KC carrying sprint phones at the time, but somehow, I don't think that was the problem.

Halloweenie...I've got the Curve 8310, and like it very much thus far...only complaint is I wish it was on the 3G network rather than EDGE.

unless you're tethering to your laptop, there really isn't much difference between EDGE and 3G, as far as I can tell atleast

so, when bob gave us the tour of LMU, the dorms and cumberland gap, I noticed a massive colorful "swastika" on the side of a building in cumberland gap. was i mistaken? i had never seen such a massive swastika in my life and was rather disgusted.

Not a Swastika. http://www.appalachianrcd.org/quilttrail/ well actually http://www.vacationaqt.com/trails/claiborne-county/ but same thing. Also, better to ask rather than accuse. I will also never have you over because I wouldn't want you throwing up on my grandmothers quilt.

In case you are curious, it is a pattern called Indian Trails and it is on the City Hall building in Cumberland Gap. Hopefully you can make the connection between the pattern and the location.

That is quite surprising for me...Verizon is the unchallenged best provider in the chicago land area in terms of call quality and signal strength

sprint does have issues in some regions..but it was never a problem for me in chicago...very comparable with verizon....i used to have ATT, but the signal fluctuates too much while in a vehicle traveling....something is wrong with their cell tower signal switching

the swastika symbol have been used throughout history for many peaceful purposes...it is the nazi's that forever changed the image of the swastika.

In fact, the symbol goes as far back as 3000 years ago, which was a symbol for the "power" god had in the Hindu religion..but the hindu swastika has 4 dots in between the lines

Unless you see it specifically looking like a nazi swastika...I wouldn't be too alarmed

I guess the same can go for the confederate flag...I used to always get agitated every time I saw a truck go by with a huge confederate flag...but I guess the flag is more of a symbol as a sign of their independence and their beliefs that state governments should triumph over the national government...instead of promoting racism and praising slavery

so unless you see a

Yeah, I had Verizon in Chicago and it was great....but it isn't around here. The signal goes in and out all around here. My wife and I switched to ATT as well and it is great around here. I highly recommend getting ATT. I had Sprint for awhile too, but I had to be in constant roaming, otherwise my phone would drop a lot of calls due to the signal going in and out.

By far, ATT is the best here.

i'm learning it depends a lot on the phone you have, too. the ones i'm looking at all have quad band and while i will probably be roaming on att towers in middlesboro, i get free roaming and will still have a signal. it uses edge and GPRS.... as far as it not being fast as 3G, that's ok with me. since i broke my phone in dec, i'm using this ghetto old phone of mine ...screen doesn't light up (eg turn the light on to dial 😛) and intermittently turns off. anything is going to be an improvement!

Woah, no offence, but how did you confuse a quilt pattern for a swastika? 😕

OK guys, I hate to bring this up again but I need to put my mind at ease. I absolutely love everything about DCOM and feel I'd be an excellent fit there, but I'm really "worried" about the rotations for 3rd and 4th year, and the fact that the school is so new. I know that the faculty are well established, but still, without the school having a well established name (yet), won't we be at a loss for quality teaching rotations? Does school reputation have any effect on landing a competitive residency, or is it mostly based on recommendations, boards, grades? I think I missed part of this presentation during the interview day because I was so nervous/worried about the interview lol

Thanks!

This was a reply by a current DCOM student to a similar question a while back. Hope this helps!

"I wanted to make sure someone answered your question because its a pretty important one. I saw someone post a message on the osteopathic board about how bad it was to set up your own rotations and such, so I was worried that there might be some fallout. The reason that not much is on the site yet is because somethings are still in the works since we are the first class going through (2011) and we don't get our rotation schedules until sometime next Novemberish toward the end of the semester. We have several hospitals in Knoxville and some into Chattanooga. So the way it works is that in 3rd year rotations we are assigned to a central site where we have rotations in our bigger hospitals. None of our rotations are more than an hours drive from our central site, and all are scheduled. We don't go hunting them down, just follow our schedule. 4th year we also have assigned rotations, but this time they are all at smaller community hospitals. This is so that we get more hands on experience.. something everybody wants and needs. 4th year we also have electives and selectives that we can choose to set up ourselves. This is so we can rotate through programs that we might be interested in attending during residency (we do set these up ourselves), or just try out some different specialties... We will even have pre-approved international rotations that we can choose to do.. I've never doubted that DCOM would not take care of us regarding our 3rd and 4th years. This school is on top of everything we have ever needed even though its new... I think they will go into a lot more detail during the interview day. Don't be afraid to ask questions! I wish I could give you some more solid info.. Maybe Nascar and MJB can chime in here.. We have a huge test Monday, so we might not be able to get right back with everybody for a few days.. but we'll try!" ~ ThePiratesse

Mike mike mike.. I was there the same day as you, and I know they talked a lot about rotations, and my mind was put at ease. They had a list of all the hospitals that had already agreed to be rotation sites, and they will only add to that list. I have no doubt in my mind that we are going to have great rotation sites, and plenty of them. So quit worrying about it 😉 And I believe that DCOM is going to prepare us so very well for boards and our clinical years that we will get awesome scores and awesome grades, so of course we will be competitive for residencies... you could go to a super well known school, and that will not mean anything if you do not do well in those areas.

So sit back, relax, and come join the DCOM Class of 2012!

Yep...they where so prepared for the basic science years..im sure they're not gonna mess it all up by ruining the 3rd and 4th years..which really makes or breaks us

haha I know, I was sooo nervous before the interview that everything literally went straight over my head. Thanks everyone!

Ok....for my friend Syncope.....Chicago is not what I consider "rural"....just in case you were wondering 😉 I'm sure that Sprint works just fine in greater Chicago. In my experience with Sprint, you're good to go as long as you're either in a major city, or within about 500 yards of an interstate. 🙂 Stray from that, and you're roaming, or have no service at all.

Mike,

If you have major concerns about rotations, I would encourage you to call either Jody or Dr. Lenz. I'm quite sure either of them will be able to address any concerns you have.

I have sprint and had no problemo up there. Inside the building, outside the building and in the surrounding area

lol..of course I didn't mean Chicago to be rural. What I meant to say is that when I travelled to other DO schools for interviews in rural areas such as WSOM and KCOM, I also did not have any problems. WVSOM is even more rural than DCOM 😀

Mike mike mike.. They had a list of all the hospitals that had already agreed to be rotation sites, and they will only add to that list.

They had a whole list of "letters of intent".......

Mike, I think yours is a legitimate concern...i think it's somewhat of a gamble. That being said from what I saw at DCOM, I think they have it under control. I have no doubt that DCOM's students will have top scores and DCOM will rise to the top. To tell you the truth the fact that DCOM is so new etc is even more impetus for them to shoot above the mark, and I really think they'll make it. And if you spank the boards, you're in for most competitive residencies regardless of the "name," really its up to you just as much as the school.

thats just my dos centimos...👍

that is true....the boards and LOR's are what equalize all students when it comes to osteopathic residencies...they can care less of the school you attended if you get kick bu++ ....however, this may be different for allopathic residencies..not sure 😕
board scores and have awesome LOR's

all i have to add to this discussion is two words

Pete DeBusk

to most of you, not being from the area, that name doesn't mean much other then the fact that he is the guy that payed for the school. But the fact that Debusk's name is on the school means that DCOM will succeed. DeBusk doesn' t do anything that is not first rate. He is a perfectionist to an extreme and has unlimited connections in and around the area. What Pete DeBusk wants, Pete DeBusk gets. There are a few big names in East TN and they basically form an oligarchy that controls the region. Pete DeBusk is one of those names.

I wouldn't worry about rotations, if you do your part and work hard, Pete DeBusk will make sure you have the tools to succeed

I just spent 6 hours at O'Hare and around 500 flights around the area have been canceled, and so did all flights flying to Knoxville, When I called the admissions office I guessing they already left since it was 3:50 CST, so I'm not sure, but I am assuming I will be able to reschedule my appointment? and if I do, whats does anybody have any idea of what the earliest time would be? I gave Janette my flight number and everything, but this really sucks...

all i have to add to this discussion is two words

Pete DeBusk

to most of you, not being from the area, that name doesn't mean much other then the fact that he is the guy that payed for the school. But the fact that Debusk's name is on the school means that DCOM will succeed. DeBusk doesn' t do anything that is not first rate. I don't think it could possibly be stated better. I have "mad respect" for that man. He's awesome. If any of us (2011's) had any doubt about his committment even after seeing the school come together, I think those doubts were quickly dispelled upon seeing him on the job site DAILY last fall, and interacting with him.

Syn, I was just messin' with ya. 😉

It's kind of a crazy idea, but can you drive? I know it's like a 8 hour drive (I make the same drive from San Francisco to San Diego a couple of times a year) but if you really want to interview than it might be worth it. If you leave in a couple of hours you could still make it and even get a couple hours of sleep if you have a hotel reservation.

I had connecting flights through Chicago for my interview and both were cancelled!!!! It was horrible. I totally feel your pain. See if they can fly you anywhere closer, anywhere in KY, VA or TN then you could drive a shorter distance.

I hope everything works out for you! :luck::luck:
