LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the quick feedback. Interesting, I didn't realize DCOM doesn't require a DO letter. Maybe this is a change from past years.

I think it is as well. I was afraid I was not going to be able to go to this school until I saw where it just said physician.

I hope they're not too beast about having a DO on the application. I really tried in this area but none would give me the time of day...

As someone who applied last year and again this year. It is definitly a change from last year. On last years secondary its stated as required where as this year it just says physician.

Since we now know this is a change that's probably the very reason. I think it's a great change. I'm somewhat local to DCOM so we have a lot of DOs in the area from the four Appalachian DO schools but I know of others who don't have a single DO in their community. The various DO mentor programs are wonderful ideas but unfortunately, from what I can tell, there's not a lot of DOs who participate.

This thread is unusually quiet this year.

How long did everyone make their secondary essays? I'm shooting for about 300-350 words for each.

I did half pages, but I didn't want to make it too long for them to read. I stuck with the main points. Hopefully I'm not penalized for it.

I was a little over 400 on each, I believe. Like a page on one and over a page on the other.

I ended up splitting the difference. I landed one around 325 and another went 480 and I couldn't cut it down without losing valid info.

One was a page and one was a page and a half double spaced. Probably won't submit for a couple more weeks or so.

I felt the same. But I really don't think it matters as long as you make it good and honest.

Unless you go overboard at like 700 words... lol :meanie:

Does anyone else feel like they are boasting in the supplemental application questions? I am typing up an answer for the first one and feel like I am just bragging away... :/

Be genuine but do speak highly of yourself! You are literally marketing yourself to schools.

Unless you bomb the interview, you're in. Roughly 50% are accepted once offered an interview. In addition, historically, they love active/former military and they love anyone with prior healthcare experience.

Go in stress free - you have nothing to worry about!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I am excited to go. 😀

If accepted, how soon do you have to give them the $1,250 deposit/matriculation fee?

I think it was around a month, but that's subject to my faulty memory, last year's information, and experience from a different part of the application cycle (I applied late).

Also the deposit might be different this year. My understanding was it is normally $2,500 but they cut it in half last year for some reason.

Best of luck on your interview!

I just emailed Robin my application/interview withdrawal for the 9/20/11. So if anyone wants an earlier date give her a call. GL

She ended up giving me the 20th for my interview because of my active duty military schedule. She said I got the date because somebody canceled but perhaps she was referring to somebody else because this happened 1.5 days ago.

She called and changes mine to the 20th. I appreciate it!!

See you on the 20th...or are you going to go to pizza night the night before? I am definately going to be there the night before.

how long should the essay questions be? I don't know if it should be 1 paragraph or half a page or a full page per question??

Any advice is appreciated.

Also how can I save the info on the Supp PDF form because it doesn't allow it to be saved?

I think it's one of those forms which you can only save a blank copy of, not the filled out information...you'll have to fill it all out and print it in the same session. 👍

Is there anyway to review the online portion of the LMU-DCOM application once you have submitted it? I have an interview on the 20th and I want to review the essays I submitted in case they ask me about them. I thought I had saved them on my computer but I cannot seem to find them. Any advice?

Do the online version. You can't save it, but you don't have to snail mail it either. Go to where it says the online version "here". (http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/admissions/forms.shtml) Also, type your essays on a word document and save them, then you can go copy and paste them in.

I personally did three quarters of a page for one and a page for another.

Good luck!!👍

Chillen at the Holiday Inn Express Middlesboro...anyone else here?

what day is your interview Ravensgal? and yes I am staying in the Holiday Inn Express.

Also...what is the attire for Pizza Night the night before? I am sure it is casual (not a suit like the interview) but I just wanted to be sure. I probably will where a polo to be safe.

what's pizza night? Also, good luck all those who already got an interview!!

Pizza Night is an informal invite the night before at Pizza Hut (I think - gotta check the flyer to be sure), where you get to meet med. students there and also meet interviewees.

I just got back from the pizza night. It really is informal and casual. There were like 5 or so med students there and we just all ate and asked questions. I almost forgot we had an interview tomorrow because everyone made us feel so relaxed.

The pizza night is super informal. Just wear whatever you want. There will be no one there that will have any impact on admissions. We are just there for you to ask any questions you might have about the school/student life/the area, or whatever else you might have questions about without you being nervous or feeling like you have to "ask the right questions" because admissions people are watching. Plus, it's always nicer to have something to do the night before an interview besides sitting in the hotel being anxious about the next day. For all you guys interviewing on the 20th, I'll see you at the pizza night on the 19th! Good luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow!:luck:

Thanks for the heads up!

all this talk about pizza night, and interviews, is making me very excited...

I just submitted my secondary this weekend.. going to keep my fingers crossed.. I REALLY want an interview from this one... !!

I am going to try to make the pizza night on the 27th, but I'll be leaving right from class and it's like a 5 hour drive so I might be cutting it a little close. I hope I make it on time though; that's a great opportunity to get to know the dynamics of the school.
