I was wondering if anyone had any idea if there was a PM&R forgiveness loan program, for practicing in a underserved area for example?

Not when you are a resident, but the biggest loan forgiveness programs are via the IHS (Indian Health Service) and the military. Both have need for physiatrists. IHS here in OK could easily employ 2-3 physiatrists just in this area. I personally see 10pts a week for new patient consults or EMG's. That is through their contract health services.

So question about what you just said. For those of us who are blessed not to have any loans, if loan forgiveness is offered, can that money be used for something else or is it strictly for med school loans?
Are there much prospects for inpt PM&R with the IHS, or is that more oupt oriented as well?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the need in the military for physiatrists is for outpt PM&R, correct? Now that the VA does most of the rehab for the DOD. Or at least the more major rehab it seems--I'm guessing post-ortho rehab is probably still done at Walter Reed (I forget its new name), Tripler, etc.

You can also negotiate loan repayment into private/academic contracts, correct? especially if it is a hospital or big system.
I just finished the job circuit. Not a single one was willing to pay loans. As RUOkie puts it, money is money. You need to consider that in your negotiations.
