Its gettting to the point where loan repayment programs (LRPs) are becoming harder to come by and more competitive every year. There was a time when every doctor who wanted a LRP got one. Unfortunately many LRPs are massive competitive, some accepting less than 50% of applicants.
Take a look at the health services corp program (NHSC). In the beginning, they were well funded and not competiting with other service groups so just about every MD who wanted to do the program got accepted.
Nowadays, things are much different, due to 2 factors:
1) Massive expansion of the program to non-doctors
2) Funding cuts on both state and national levels
These days, everybody and their brother qualifies for the NHSC stuff, including dentists, PAs, NPs, etc
I think this practice should be stopped.
HSC and other LRPs should be prioritized for primary care medical doctors. A PMD in a rural area is far more valuable than a PA or an NP. Its a joke that they are considered equal candidates/equal value for the LRPs.
Primary care MDs and DOs should have first grab at all the loan funds. Only if there are outstanding loan funds available should everybody else get access. After the MD/DOs get in, then the dentists get their shot, and then finally the PAs/NPs can compete for the scraps.
Let the hating begin
